HadUKP - UK regional precipitation series
HadUKP is a series of datasets of UK regional precipitation, which incorporates the long-running England & Wales
Precipitation (EWP) series beginning in 1766, the longest instrumental series of this kind in the world.
The map (below) shows the regions that are available.
The monthly EWP series goes back to 1766, whereas the monthly series for the sub-regions of England and Wales begin in 1873.
The monthly series for Scotland (and sub-regions) and Northern Ireland begin in 1931. All the daily series begin in 1931.
Brief description of the data
HadUKP incorporates a selection of long-running rainfall stations to provide a homogeneity-adjusted
series of areally averaged precipitation. The England and Wales (HadEWP) precipitation totals are
based on daily weighted totals from a network of stations within each of five England and Wales regions.
A full quality control is performed on the 5th of each subsequent month, allowing monthly totals to be updated.

- During 2011, all daily and monthly HadUKP values since the start of 2006 were re-calculated using a more representative,
evenly-spread selection of stations. This was necessary because some stations had closed and also some new ones were available.
Thus some values have altered, but overall the figures are more accurate. We have ensured that the series remain homogeneous.
The process of selecting the updated set of stations is described in this Climate Memorandum.
- HadUKP is produced using an operational system which relies on a number of components. Daily support is
not available for this system, therefore the data may occasionally be found not to be right up-to-date. If you
experience any problems or want to request a more reliable service please contact us.
- Please note that an alternative
England and Wales Rainfall series is produced at the Met Office by the National Climate
Information Centre. It is calculated from a gridded dataset produced using all available
stations back to 1910, but it is not available for daily timescales and is not adjusted for temporal
homogeneity. HadUKP is based upon a smaller network of representative stations and is adjusted for temporal
homogeneity as well as being available on daily timescales back to 1931.
- We are currently working on a project to merge the HadUKP series with the England and Wales Rainfall series described above. The outcome of
this project will be a single historical rainfall series for the UK. If you would like further information about the proposed merged
precipitation series, please contact ncic@metoffice.gov.uk.
