Availability of 15 minute Satellite map layers

We have recently been made aware that we are not complying with our Eumetsat Licence Agreement by making 15 minute satellite map layers available for re-use. To comply with this agreement we will shortly be making a change so the map layers will only update every three hours. This is likely to occur in the next 2-3 weeks and we will tell you the exact timing as soon as we are able to.

If you currently use either the IR or Visible Satellite images and wish to carry on having access to them at 15 minute intervals through DataPoint please contact our wholesale manager, Tom McIlwaine, who will provide you with a quote for an appropriate Eumetsat Licence. The price of a licence starts at around €2,500, but is dependent on your usage of the data. Tom can be contacted at wholesaling@metoffice.gov.uk.

The release is scheduled to start at 14:00 BST and end at 16:00 BST. The release will contain the following:

  • It will resolve instances where users are experiencing difficulties accessing or retrieving their API key.
  • There will be a change in the map layers latitude and longitude boundaries. The new area covered by the bounding box is 48° to 61° North and 12° West to 5° East. This extends the box to include Jersey and Guernsey. The image size is still 500 x 500 pixels.
  • The UK site-specific forecast datafeeds site lists will match the site list available on the Met Office web site.
  • The UK 3-hourly site-specific forecast datafeed will start from today (the day of issue) rather than tomorrow.
  • Satellite images, infrared and visible, will include the attribution © EUMETSAT as part of the image.

Change implemented on map layer cache at 10:00 BST on Thursday 16 August 2012 CRQ 134975

A configuration change was undertaken on the observations map layer cache between 10:00 and 10:05 on Thursday, 16 August 2012.

In addition a fix was implemented for the missing 'Z'. A 'Z' has been introduced to the base URL, as shown below. If you have already implemented the workaround of adding the 'Z', this will need to be removed.

http://datapoint.metoffice.gov.uk/public/data/layer/wxobs/{LayerName}/{ImageFormat}?TIME={Time}Z or

http://datapoint.metoffice.gov.uk/public/data/layer/wxfcs/{LayerName}/{ImageFormat}?RUN={DefaultTime}&FORECAST={Timestep}Z

14 August 2012

GetCapabilities URL description

It has been noticed that the getCapabilities return does not include reference to the API key. When creating your URL to retrieve data the following should be added to the end of the URL string '&key={API key}'

10 August 2012

Issue raised for observation and forecast map layers

When trying to build a URL to return a rainfall radar image a HTTP 400 Bad Request error is returned. Example URL:

http://datapoint.metoffice.gov.uk/public/data/layer/wxobs/RADAR_UK_Composite_Highres/png?key={API key}&TIME=2012-08-03T12:45:00

Response

The getCapabilities files for the data/layer/wxobs and data/layer/wxfcs report the time incorrectly. The work around until the fix is implemented is to add a 'Z' to the time. Example URL:

http://datapoint.metoffice.gov.uk/public/data/layer/wxobs/RADAR_UK_Composite_Highres/png?TIME=2012-08-03T12:45:00Z&key={API key}

Fix implemented at 10:00 16 August 2012

8 August 2012

Issue raised for UK daily site specific forecast datafeed INC461012

The new version of the UK site specific forecast datafeed is offering data starting from tomorrow not today, and provides six days instead of five. The documentation still indicates that the daily forecast includes today (if before 18:00) and provides five days.

Response

We're passing the data date as a valid-from to the back-end system, so requesting 2012-08-06T10:00:00Z leaves out the data for 2012-08-06T00:00:00Z.

There is a work around that can be applied by specifying the valid-to and valid-from in the URL:

http://datapoint.metoffice.gov.uk/public/data/val/wxfcs/all/xml/310007?res=daily&valid-from=2012-08-06T00:00:00Z&valid-to=2012-08-10T00:00:00Z&key={API key}

The date for the fix will be notified shortly.
