Climate science

Climate Science provides the science capabilities to meet the requirements of a number of government and business customers.

We provide advice to underpin mitigation and adaptation policy formation and decision making. The programme has components involving the development of climate datasets based on observations; the use of these datasets in climate change monitoring and attribution; and the use of Earth System Models to make future predictions from months to centuries into the future.

Earth System Science

Earth System Science Carrying out research and development to improve the Earth System components of our climate models and applying these models to inform climate mitigation policies

Climate impacts

Climate impacts Investigating the impacts of climate change and variability on Earth and human systems; including water resources, agriculture, ecosystems, health and energy.

Climate Monitoring

Climate Monitoring Developing observational data; monitoring and interpreting climate variations and change.

Cryosphere and Oceans

Cryosphere and Oceans Improving our understanding of the role of the oceans and the cryosphere (ice) in the climate system.

Seasonal to decadal

Seasonal to decadal Research and development of skilful ensemble forecasts on seasonal to decadal timescales, for adaptation to climate variability and change

Understanding Climate

Understanding Climate Quantifying and reducing uncertainty in climate change, through understanding and improving the representation of key processes.
