Blue clouds sitting beneath a bright sky

Met Office Large Eddy Model (LEM)

Its primary uses are for the modelling of clouds and atmospheric flows. The results of these simulations help us to develop the physics parametrizations in the Unified Model.

LEM use and collaboration

A number of process studies have been carried out using the LEM, including those within the GASS framework. Examples include the modelling of:

  • stable boundary layers;

  • shallow convection;

  • warm precipitating convection;

  • deep convection;

  • polar clouds.

Comparison with other models and observations from field campaigns demonstrate that the LEM is able to well represent a wide range of cloud types under a number of environmental conditions. Based on these process studies we are able to better understand the fundamental behaviours of clouds, microphysics and turbulence.

As well as providing insight into the physical processes, considerable use of these simulations is made in developing and improving the subgrid parametrizations used in the Unified Model. The detailed processes in the LEM are also used to guide the development of future capabilities such as the inclusion in our model of sophisticated cloud-aerosol interactions.

If you would like to use the LEM code and collaborate in its development, then please read more at the LEM website. The model is available for external use for collaborative projects under a research license.
