Dr Gavin Evans

Areas of expertise

Current activities

Gavin's work is focused on the implementation of the Grid2Grid river forecasting model on the Met Office High Performance Supercomputer. This will allow improved access to the precipitation data required to drive the model, and improved processing times, thanks to the resources available at the Met Office. The aim of this work is therefore to improve the forecasting of rainfall-driven flooding events. The Grid2Grid model was developed at the Centre of Ecology and Hydrology.

Gavin also contributes to the gridded Post-Processing team, which bridges the divide between modelling scientists and operational forecasters. Continued improvement to the transfer of multi-model data for optimal use in operational circumstances is a long-term goal of this team.

Career background

Gavin joined the Met Office's Post Processing team in 2013. Prior to this, he completed a PhD in Physical Oceanography at the University of Southampton entitled "Circulation and Carbon Variability in the South Atlantic Ocean". Prior to this Gavin undertook a MSc at the University of Birmingham in Applied Meteorology and Climatology, and a MPhys in Physics at the University of Warwick.
