The following represents an assessment of the weather experienced across the UK during summer 2010 (June, July and August) and how it compared with the averages for the period 1971 to 2000.
The UK mean temperature for summer was 14.6 °C, which is 0.6 °C above average. Mean temperatures were 1.6 °C above average during June, 0.7 °C above during July and 0.5 °C below in August. The frequent cloudy conditions in July and August meant that temperatures tended to be lower, relative to normal, by day than by night. It was the coolest August since 1993, even though mean temperatures were only somewhat below the 1971-2000 average.
The UK summer rainfall was 7% above normal, but the three months had very contrasting patterns. June was drier than normal in most areas, with less than 50% of average in much of north-west and southern England. July was much wetter than normal in the west and north, with over 200% of average widely. In marked contrast, most of the eastern half of England was relatively dry with less than 30% of normal in parts of the south-east. In August, the wettest weather was focussed on East Anglia, and Sussex and parts of the east Midlands with over 200% of normal. Overall, while a few areas received below average summer rainfall, the areas that were wetter than normal were generally more extensive. The wettest areas were in a broad swathe from East Anglia to south Wales, north-west England and much of northern Scotland.
Sunshine totals for the summer were within ±10% of average generally across the UK. The pattern was somewhat variable, with the dullest areas being the Scottish Borders, northern Scotland and north Wales, and the sunniest mainly north-east England. June was the sunniest month, with 124% of normal for the UK. It was particularly sunny over south-west England and south Wales, where it was the fifth sunniest June in an 82-year series. July was duller than average over the UK (79% of normal), especially in many western areas. Sunshine was again below normal in August (88%), with south-east and central southern England having the fourth dullest August on record.
