Olympic Games - Basketball

Check the forecast for the Basketball Arena before travelling to the Olympic Games.

The London 2012 basketball tournament will take place in the Olympic Park between 28 July and 12 August.

The men's quarter finals and all semi finals and finals will be competed in the North Greenwich Arena.

This will be the first time since London last hosted the Olympics in 1948 that Team GB has entered a team in the competition.

Basketball is one of the only competitions in the Olympic Games where the host nation does not qualify automatically to compete.

Men's basketball was first competed at an Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 and took place on an outdoor court. The USA won the Gold medal in each competition between 1936 and 1968. The women's tournament was introduced to the programme in 1976.

Twelve teams will compete in each competition to become Olympic champions and to take the Gold medal for their country.
