Forecast summary

Regional forecast for North East England

Mainly dry this morning, outbreaks of rain arriving this afternoon.

Today:

Mainly dry this morning with sunny spells, after early frost and fog patches, although an isolated shower may arrive. Then outbreaks of rain or sleet will spread east, falling as sleet or snow over high ground, with no accumulations expected. Maximum Temperature 7 °C.

Tonight:

Outbreaks of rain, sleet or snow will move away, leaving long clear spells and allowing a widespread frost to develop. Ice is also likely to form on untreated surfaces. Minimum Temperature -2 °C.

Wednesday:

After a frosty but dry and largely sunny start cloud will increase, bringing a few showers. The showers will be mainly across The Pennines, and perhaps wintry at times. Maximum Temperature 8 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

The unsettled and sometimes wintry and rather cold weather will continue, with showers or longer spells of rain. These will be heavy at times, with snow over high ground.

The east and far north start dry with sunny spells, but showers in the west will eventually spread into most areas, as well as some hill snow further north. Winds will increase and become strong on western coasts.

Tonight:

Showers easing for most, aside from the north of Scotland. Winds easing, and cold again, although not as cold as last night. Rain arrives in the far south-west towards dawn.

Wednesday:

Band of rain spreading north through southern and central parts, but mostly dry with sunshine and the odd shower elsewhere. Winds increase again in the far south-west later.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Unsettled with further bands of rain affecting the country with strong winds at times. Some brief brighter, drier spells. Cold in the north with night frosts. Milder in the south.

Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Saturday 4 Mar 2017 to Monday 13 Mar 2017:

An unsettled picture is likely as frontal systems move into the UK from the south or southwest, bringing wet and windy weather at times. Snow is likely over northern hills, with a low risk of some snow more widely at times across the north. Between frontal systems, there should be some spells of brighter weather with showers which may be wintry at times in the north. Nevertheless, some brief quieter, drier spells are also likely. Temperatures will generally vary around normal for the time of year, often slightly above average in the south but rather cold at times in the north, with night frosts. There remains the possibility of a more widely settled but colder period, perhaps giving wintry showers in the east and north.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 14 Mar 2017 to Tuesday 28 Mar 2017:

For the rest of March signals are weak and confidence is low. It will probably be rather unsettled with spells of wet and windy weather at first, interspersed with brighter and showery conditions. Some snow is also possible across the north of the UK. There should, however, also be some drier and brighter spells, where we may see some local frost and fog at times overnight. Temperatures are expected to be around normal for the time of year. However, there remains the possibility of seeing some prolonged colder periods, with a chance of snow in places. This is more likely later in the period.
