Forecast summary

Regional forecast for North East England

Windy. Heavy rain across hills, drier and brighter to east.

Today:

Cloud and persistent heavy rain over the northern Pennines and at times the Cheviots. Outbreaks of rain elsewhere much more patchy, and with some dry, bright periods in the east feeling mild. However, winds very strong and gusty. Maximum Temperature 12 °C.

Tonight:

Winds easing through the evening as the rain gradually weakens and clears slowly southeast. This should leave a dry, but rather chilly end to the night. Minimum Temperature 3 °C.

Sunday:

A dry, bright start but a further band of rain and strong winds moving east during the afternoon. Colder conditions to follow with scattered showers. Maximum Temperature 10 °C.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Monday and Tuesday, wintry showers occasionally heavy with hail and thunder possible, but also sunny intervals. Rather cold with overnight frost. Wednesday, band of cloud and rain moving east later.

UK forecast for the next 5 days

Cloudy with strong winds and rain

Today:

Rain will affect many northern areas at first, pushing further south through the day. Windy in parts of the north with a risk of local flooding in north west England. Becoming brighter further north in the afternoon.

Tonight:

A cold night with scattered showers in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Milder and cloudier further south with rain clearing England and Wales overnight, but more rain approaching from the north-west.

Sunday:

A dry and bright start for mainland UK; becoming generally cloudier and windy with rain spreading from the west. Persistent rain and gales along western exposed areas; east remaining dry.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Sunny spells and heavy blustery showers are widely expected, some turning thundery with snow over hills. Feeling much colder, especially in the north with overnight frosts, but milder further south.

Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Thursday 2 Mar 2017 to Saturday 11 Mar 2017:

An unsettled picture is likely as frontal systems move into the UK from the west or southwest, bringing wet and windy weather at times with gales in places. Snow is likely over northern hills, with a low risk of some snow more widely at times across the north. Between frontal systems, there should be some spells of brighter weather with showers which may be wintry at times in the north. Nevertheless, some brief quieter, drier spells are also likely. Temperatures will generally vary around normal for the time of year, often slightly above average in the south but rather cold at times in the north, with night frosts. There remains the possibility of a more widely settled but colder period, perhaps giving wintry showers in the east and north.

Updated at: 1200 on Sat 25 Feb 2017

UK Outlook for Sunday 12 Mar 2017 to Sunday 26 Mar 2017:

For the rest of March signals are weak and confidence is low. It will probably be rather unsettled with spells of wet and windy weather at first, interspersed with brighter and showery conditions. Some snow is also possible across the north of the UK. There should, however, also be some drier and brighter spells, where we may see some local frost and fog at times overnight. Temperatures are expected to be slightly above normal for the time of year. However, there remains the possibility of seeing a more prolonged cold spell, with an increased chance of snow in places. This is more likely later in the period.
