Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Saturday 30 May 2015 to Monday 8 Jun 2015:

The transition from May into June is expected to be unsettled, with spells of rain interspersed by drier, brighter and more showery interludes. It may be rather windy, particularly in the northwest, with the bulk of the rainfall also here. Southern and eastern areas look best placed for the driest, brightest weather. Temperatures are likely to be below average in the northwest, but near average further south and east. Into the first week of June unsettled conditions are considered likely to continue in the northwest, with slightly below average temperatures, but more settled, warmer, conditions may start to dominate in the southeast. Towards the weekend these warmer more settled conditions look likely to spread to most of the country although perhaps with a risk of showers in the south.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 9 Jun 2015 to Tuesday 23 Jun 2015:

There still remains some uncertainty in the likely weather type through this period. There is, however, a signal for higher pressure to become established to the north of the UK until the middle of June. This would lead to drier, warmer conditions for many, these perhaps most prolonged in the north, but it may also allow some more unsettled, perhaps thundery, weather to move up from continental Europe and affect the south of the country. As we head into the third week of June there is a chance that similar conditions may persist with drier than average conditions in the north, however some unsettled spells are also likely at times.

Cardiff information

Cardiff was named capital city of Wales in 1955 and with population of around 350,000, Cardiff is the 10th largest UK city.

The city has a long and varied history, with evidence suggesting the existence of settlers in the area around 1,500 years before the building of Stonehenge. Cardiff's easy access to the coal fields of South Wales has played a large part in its history and demand for coal, used for manufacturing iron and steel, led to Cardiff becoming the world's largest coal port. Since then, the economy of Cardiff has diversified into a range of industries. Cardiff is now the largest media centre outside of London and is the home of BBC Wales, ITV Wales and S4C.

A close proximity to the sea has a moderating influence on temperatures in Cardiff and during winter they can be among the highest in the UK. The minimum average daytime temperature is 2.1 °C. This is for the month of February, when UK minimums are around 0.7 °C. Rainfall is much higher in December and January than February.

Temperatures start to become fairly pleasant from April and in spring the chance of an air frost is much less in Cardiff than other locations in the UK. March sees a few more days of rainfall greater than 1 mm than February but this number falls as we head into April. Spring is the driest season in Cardiff, with rainfall accumulation around 230 mm. There is a notable jump in sunshine hours from March to April; both more than the UK average.

Cardiff's hottest temperatures are usually seen in July, with daytime maxima for this month at 21.7 °C - although August is very close at 21.5 °C. July also has the highest average sunshine hours of any month. Rainfall is around the same as the UK average during summer in Cardiff and august often receives the most. In Cardiff thunder occurs on an average of 11 days a year, compared with 15 to 20 days at many places in England.

September and even October cling on to mild temperatures in Cardiff with the average high in the former approaching 19 °C. Sunshine hours are still quite high in early autumn but in October rainfall does start to significantly increase. Overall autumn is the wettest time in Cardiff, with more 'rain days' than any other season and a higher rainfall accumulation.
