Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Friday 24 Oct 2014 to Sunday 2 Nov 2014:

Generally cloudy on Friday with rain likely moving northeastwards across many parts of England and Wales and showers, locally heavy, across the northwest. It will be breezy in the north and perhaps the far south. Temperatures will be near or slightly above normal. From the weekend high pressure is likely to gradually build from the southwest, creating a north south split. There will be generally drier and brighter conditions in the south with a risk of a local frost and fog overnight. More unsettled conditions are likely in the north with outbreaks of rain and a risk of gales which are likely to be interspersed with colder, more showery spells, these possibly turning wintry over Scottish hills at times. The split in conditions will likely continue into November.

UK Outlook for Monday 3 Nov 2014 to Monday 17 Nov 2014:

The main signal is for a continuation of a north/south split during the first half of November. During this period, the generally westerly flow is likely to bring spells of wet and windy weather, interspersed with drier intervals. These should mostly affect northern and some western areas, but perhaps reaching other areas as well at times. However southern and some eastern areas will probably see more in the way of the drier and settled conditions. These drier intervals will bring some sunshine at times, but also the risk of frost, mist and fog overnight. Daytime temperatures are likely to be near or a little above normal, although feeling cooler during any wet and windy spells.

Cardiff weather

Cardiff was named capital city of Wales in 1955 and with population of around 350,000, Cardiff is the 10th largest UK city.

The city has a long and varied history, with evidence suggesting the existence of settlers in the area around 1,500 years before the building of Stonehenge. Cardiff's easy access to the coal fields of South Wales has played a large part in its history and demand for coal, used for manufacturing iron and steel, led to Cardiff becoming the world's largest coal port. Since then, the economy of Cardiff has diversified into a range of industries. Cardiff is now the largest media centre outside of London and is the home of BBC Wales, ITV Wales and S4C.

A close proximity to the sea has a moderating influence on temperatures in Cardiff and during winter they can be among the highest in the UK. The minimum average daytime temperature is 2.1 °C. This is for the month of February, when UK minimums are around 0.7 °C. Rainfall is much higher in December and January than February.

Temperatures start to become fairly pleasant from April and in spring the chance of an air frost is much less in Cardiff than other locations in the UK. March sees a few more days of rainfall greater than 1 mm than February but this number falls as we head into April. Spring is the driest season in Cardiff, with rainfall accumulation around 230mm. There is a notable jump in sunshine hours from March to April; both more than the UK average.

Cardiff's hottest temperatures are usually seen in July, with daytime maxima for this month at 21.7 °C - although August is very close at 21.5 °C. July also has the highest average sunshine hours of any month. Rainfall is around the same as the UK average during summer in Cardiff and august often receives the most. In Cardiff thunder occurs on an average of 11 days a year, compared with 15 to 20 days at many places in England.

September and even October cling on to mild temperatures in Cardiff with the average high in the former approaching 19 °C. Sunshine hours are still quite high in early autumn but in October rainfall does start to significantly increase. Overall autumn is the wettest time in Cardiff, with more 'rain days' than any other season and a higher rainfall accumulation.
