Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Monday 15 Feb 2016 to Wednesday 24 Feb 2016:

Rather cold conditions are likely at first, with showery conditions across the east and far southwest, and fine conditions elsewhere. Showers are likely to be a mix of sleet, snow and hail, and there will be a widespread overnight frost. It should then turn drier from the west by Tuesday, but remaining cold with widespread, locally severe, overnight frosts. Later next week, unsettled, changeable conditions should gradually return from the west, with a band of cloud and rain making erratic progress eastwards, which may also give some transient snow in places. Thereafter, it should remain unsettled with northwestern areas seeing the wettest, windiest weather, and southeastern areas likely to see more in the way of drier spells. Temperatures returning to near normal, although with overnight frosts still possible.

UK Outlook for Thursday 25 Feb 2016 to Thursday 10 Mar 2016:

Indications are that the end of February will be dominated by unsettled, changeable weather coming in from the Atlantic. This will bring showers or longer spells of rain to most parts, wettest in northwestern areas, while southeastern parts may benefit from some longer dry spells. Snow is likely at times, mainly over northern hills. Temperatures should generally be near normal for the time of year, with the chance of occasional frosty nights where skies become clear. Generally windy with gales or even severe gales at times, mainly in northern and western parts. Into early March there is a possibility of more settled weather becoming established, mainly across southern areas, bringing drier and less windy conditions here, however, wet and windy weather will more likely persist in the north and west.

Cardiff information

Cardiff was named capital city of Wales in 1955 and with population of around 350,000, Cardiff is the 10th largest UK city.

The city has a long and varied history, with evidence suggesting the existence of settlers in the area around 1,500 years before the building of Stonehenge. Cardiff's easy access to the coal fields of South Wales has played a large part in its history and demand for coal, used for manufacturing iron and steel, led to Cardiff becoming the world's largest coal port. Since then, the economy of Cardiff has diversified into a range of industries. Cardiff is now the largest media centre outside of London and is the home of BBC Wales, ITV Wales and S4C.

A close proximity to the sea has a moderating influence on temperatures in Cardiff and during winter they can be among the highest in the UK. The minimum average daytime temperature is 2.1 °C. This is for the month of February, when UK minimums are around 0.7 °C. Rainfall is much higher in December and January than February.

Temperatures start to become fairly pleasant from April and in spring the chance of an air frost is much less in Cardiff than other locations in the UK. March sees a few more days of rainfall greater than 1 mm than February but this number falls as we head into April. Spring is the driest season in Cardiff, with rainfall accumulation around 230 mm. There is a notable jump in sunshine hours from March to April; both more than the UK average.

Cardiff's hottest temperatures are usually seen in July, with daytime maxima for this month at 21.7 °C - although August is very close at 21.5 °C. July also has the highest average sunshine hours of any month. Rainfall is around the same as the UK average during summer in Cardiff and august often receives the most. In Cardiff thunder occurs on an average of 11 days a year, compared with 15 to 20 days at many places in England.

September and even October cling on to mild temperatures in Cardiff with the average high in the former approaching 19 °C. Sunshine hours are still quite high in early autumn but in October rainfall does start to significantly increase. Overall autumn is the wettest time in Cardiff, with more 'rain days' than any other season and a higher rainfall accumulation.
