Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Thursday 30 Oct 2014 to Saturday 8 Nov 2014:

Becoming generally cloudy across the UK, but staying dry with bright spells across southern and eastern parts on Thursday. Northern and western parts will become wetter with outbreaks of rain. The rain will likely become heavier and more persistent later that day. Winds also increase, becoming strong in the west, and gales may develop across the far northwest. A north-south split then looks most likely to dominate. The most wetter, windier conditions likely in the north and northwest; with gales, perhaps even severe gales in the far northwest, next weekend. The best of the drier weather likely in the south and southeast; although there is likely to be some rain here at times. Temperatures generally near normal, but perhaps falling slightly below average later with snow on Scottish mountains possible.

UK Outlook for Saturday 8 Nov 2014 to Saturday 22 Nov 2014:

The main signal is for a continuation of a north-south split during the second week of November. During this period, the generally westerly flow is likely to bring spells of wet and windy weather, mostly affecting northern and some western areas, but perhaps reaching other areas as well, this interspersed with drier intervals. However, southern and some eastern areas will probably see more in the way of drier and settled conditions increasing the likelihood of some sunshine, but also the risk of frost, mist and fog overnight, the latter of which could be slow to clear. After this it looks like unsettled weather will spread to much of the UK. Daytime temperatures will probably be near or a little above normal, although feeling cooler during any wet and windy spells.

Birkenhead information

Birkenhead is a large town on the Wirral peninsula which is formed by the Rivers Mersey to the north and Dee to the south. It sits opposite Liverpool, to which it is connected by road tunnels and the historic “Ferry across the Mersey”.

A ferry service has been known to exist in this position since at least 1150 when a Benedictine priory was built at Birkenhead. Before the arrival of a steam ferry in the mid 19th century the area remained largely agricultural.

The area eventually developed as an adjunct to the rapidly developing Liverpool as a major trading port, when transport connections were established.

1829 saw the formation of the Laird ironworks which eventually became Cammell Laird shipbuilders, which is still operating as a ship building and refurbishment business.

The town was connected by rail to Liverpool in 1886 and directly by road only as recently as 1932.
