Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Wednesday 8 Jul 2015 to Friday 17 Jul 2015:

Bright and breezy on Wednesday with a mixture of showers and sunny spells for many places. However, it is likely to be cloudier in the north with some longer spells of rain developing here. Less windy on Thursday with the showers becoming restricted to northern parts, with mostly dry conditions and some periods of sunshine developing elsewhere. After this, a fairly quiet period of weather leading into next weekend and the following week, with mostly dry conditions across southern parts but perhaps some rain at times in the north. Temperatures during this period will tend to drop a little below normal to start with, this feeling much cooler than of late for many places, before slowly rising later, especially in the southeast.

UK Outlook for Saturday 18 Jul 2015 to Saturday 1 Aug 2015:

Many southern and central parts of the UK are likely to be mostly dry, often with fine, warm conditions. Towards the north and northwest there will be some cloudier conditions with rain at times, although even here some good periods of dry weather are expected. Temperatures are likely to be around average in the north, but in the south there may be spells of very warm weather for the time of year. These hot conditions bring a low risk of occasional thundery outbreaks, mainly for the southeast.

Edinburgh information

The Scottish capital of Edinburgh is a city that is steeped in history. Recognised as a World Heritage Site in 1995, the city and its 5,000 listed buildings attract visitors from around the world. Primitive settlements first appeared in the area as early as the Bronze Age, and by the 12th Century there was an established settlement in the area.

The city is built on a series of ridges and volcanic rocks, the most famous of which is Castle Rock. Edinburgh Castle sits atop Castle Rock, at the end of the Royal Mile. The New Year's Eve celebration in Edinburgh, known as Hogmanay, is also one of the biggest across the world with 100,000 people attending the annual street party.

The average daytime maximum temperature in Edinburgh is 7 °C during winter - which is around the UK average. Rainfall is fairly low compared to other locations in Scotland and significantly lower than the UK average. Around 175 mm of rain falls on average in winter each year, with the most rainfall in January.

Initially in spring, average temperatures in Edinburgh are above the UK average, but as season progresses this evens out. Daytime maximums rise from 9 °C in March to close to 15 °C by May. May is also the sunniest month of the year with over 188 hours on average. Spring sees less rainfall than any other season in Edinburgh with accumulation of 160 mm.

The Royal Mile is the focal point of the annual Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the largest arts festival in the world, taking place across the city every August.

July is usually the warmest month in Edinburgh with mean temperatures approaching 20 °C; and the highest temperature ever recorded in Edinburgh was 31.4 °C on 4th August 1975. Edinburgh is situated among the sunniest place in Scotland. Whilst spring sees the sunniest month; on average sunshine hours are higher through the summer. On the eastern coast Edinburgh is sheltered from the rain-baring westerly winds. Days with rainfall more than 1mm are much lower than locations in western Scotland.

Temperatures start to fall from September by around 3 °C each month based on average daytime maxima. By November temperatures can drop as low as 4 °C. Days of rainfall greater than 1 mm are highest in the autumn months for Edinburgh and likewise the largest rainfall amounts usually fall between September and November.
