Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Monday 6 Apr 2015 to Wednesday 15 Apr 2015:

It should remain largely dry with some sunny spells and light winds on Easter Monday, particularly over southern and southwestern parts, however skies will likely remain fairly cloudy in general. Parts of the northwest may be affected by some light rain and drizzle too. High pressure is then likely to remain dominant through to the middle of the month with a good deal of dry weather and with some sunny spells likely, and with temperatures probably around average, perhaps just above during the daytime. However, northern and western parts could see some rain at times with some windier periods too, although any rain should weaken as it edges southeast into other parts of the country.

UK Outlook for Thursday 16 Apr 2015 to Thursday 30 Apr 2015:

From the middle of April it is probable that the high pressure will decline away, allowing a more westerly flow with conditions more typical for the time of year. As such some spells of fine, dry weather are likely, the best of these probably over southern parts. Occasional bouts of more unsettled and windier weather should also be expected with colder, and occasionally showery conditions, more especially across northwestern parts. Temperatures are likely to be around normal for the time of year with marked differences from day to day, and with localised frost still possible.

Cambridge information

Cambridge is a city that is renowned for its world famous university. The University of Cambridge, founded in 1209, is famed for not only being the second oldest university in England but also for having more Nobel Prize winners amongst it's alumni than any other university in history. To date, 61 former graduates have won the Nobel Prize, along with eight Fields Medals and two Abel Prizes.

But the city is about more than just education. Cambridge dates back to before the Roman Empire, where there is evidence of a settlement in the area from a 3,500 year old farmstead found in the ground of Fitzwilliam College. The current population of the city is around 130,000, with roughly 22,000 students.

In Cambridge, minimum average daytime temperatures range from 1.9 °C to 1.3 °C during the winter months. This is slightly above the UK average. February is the coldest month and usually has more air frost days than any other - although December is a close second. It's also the driest individual month of the year. Rainfall accumulation in Cambridge is at its second lowest during winter. Despite this, January has the most days of rainfall greater than 1 mm.

Average maximum daytime temperatures in Cambridge can increase from 10.6 °C in March to approaching 17 °C by May. These values are around 2 degrees above the UK average. Days of air frost halve from March to April and around four days every ten years of air frost in May. Spring is the driest time in Cambridge, with rainfall accumulation significantly below the UK average.

The hottest month of the year in Cambridge is July, when temperatures typically reach 23 °C. Rainfall is higher than spring, although still less than both autumn and the UK average for summer. Over the course of summer, the most rainfall usually occurs in June when rainfall accumulation is around 56 mm.

Cambridge is one of the driest locations in the United Kingdom. Autumn sees the most rain but it's still notably lower than many other places. For October, the wettest month, rainfall accumulation is 59 mm. The UK average for October is double this figure. Temperatures generally decrease from highs of 19 °C in September to maxima of 10 °C by November. On average there is at least 1 day every year of air frost in October, but this more than quadruples in November.

Climate data based on Cambridge Niab, 1981 - 2010.
