Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Saturday 9 May 2015 to Monday 18 May 2015:

It will start dry and bright for many on Saturday, but outbreaks of rain will likely develop across many parts and then remain mostly unsettled through the weekend. It is probable that conditions will remain unsettled in the northwest through the following week with occasional outbreaks of rain and showers, and some strong winds at times. Drier, brighter conditions are more likely in the southeast. This pattern may continue over the weekend, but there is also a signal that more settled conditions will build across all parts of the UK for a time. Temperatures will start off chilly on Saturday, but they should generally rise closer to average, and perhaps become warm at times in the southeast.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 19 May 2015 to Tuesday 2 Jun 2015:

Overall conditions will be fairly mixed during this period, with many areas experiencing spells of fine and bright weather at times, but interspersed with more changeable conditions. The most unsettled conditions are likely to be across northern and northwestern areas at first. The best of the settled weather being more likely in the south and southeast. Towards the end of the month drier conditions may become more prevalent across northern areas as well. Temperatures are likely to be near or just above average for most areas, with spells of more settled weather likely to be accompanied by higher daytime temperatures, especially in the south and southeast. Some chilly evenings are also likely, perhaps with isolated overnight frost, most likely in rural northern areas.

Cambridge information

Cambridge is a city that is renowned for its world famous university. The University of Cambridge, founded in 1209, is famed for not only being the second oldest university in England but also for having more Nobel Prize winners amongst it's alumni than any other university in history. To date, 61 former graduates have won the Nobel Prize, along with eight Fields Medals and two Abel Prizes.

But the city is about more than just education. Cambridge dates back to before the Roman Empire, where there is evidence of a settlement in the area from a 3,500 year old farmstead found in the ground of Fitzwilliam College. The current population of the city is around 130,000, with roughly 22,000 students.

In Cambridge, minimum average daytime temperatures range from 1.9 °C to 1.3 °C during the winter months. This is slightly above the UK average. February is the coldest month and usually has more air frost days than any other - although December is a close second. It's also the driest individual month of the year. Rainfall accumulation in Cambridge is at its second lowest during winter. Despite this, January has the most days of rainfall greater than 1 mm.

Average maximum daytime temperatures in Cambridge can increase from 10.6 °C in March to approaching 17 °C by May. These values are around 2 degrees above the UK average. Days of air frost halve from March to April and around four days every ten years of air frost in May. Spring is the driest time in Cambridge, with rainfall accumulation significantly below the UK average.

The hottest month of the year in Cambridge is July, when temperatures typically reach 23 °C. Rainfall is higher than spring, although still less than both autumn and the UK average for summer. Over the course of summer, the most rainfall usually occurs in June when rainfall accumulation is around 56 mm.

Cambridge is one of the driest locations in the United Kingdom. Autumn sees the most rain but it's still notably lower than many other places. For October, the wettest month, rainfall accumulation is 59 mm. The UK average for October is double this figure. Temperatures generally decrease from highs of 19 °C in September to maxima of 10 °C by November. On average there is at least 1 day every year of air frost in October, but this more than quadruples in November.

Climate data based on Cambridge Niab, 1981 - 2010.
