Liverpool information

Liverpool is situated in the metropolitan county of Merseyside, located in the north-west of England. As a port city with a population of 466,000 it has played an important role in the industrialisation of Britain and the north-west.

At one point in the early 19th century, 40% of all goods transported worldwide passed through Liverpool, establishing the city as a major industrial hub. Raw materials for the goods produced in nearby Manchester were shipped into and out from Liverpool by canal - a method of transport later replaced by the Liverpool and Manchester Railway system, the first of its kind in the world.

Liverpool was the birthplace of the Merseybeat music movement, a movement that gave rise to the biggest-selling rock n roll group in the world, The Beatles. The city continues to attract tourism based on its musical heritage to this day and as such, can boast of top-class facilities and other attractions including the Echo Arena, which continues to attract some of the world’s leading acts.

The city is also famed for its sporting history, with the Grand National, one of the world’s most famous horse racing events, being held at nearby Aintree every spring.

Of course, Liverpool is also famed for its footballing heritage and since the formation of the Football League in 1888, Liverpool is the only city to have hosted football matches in the top tier of the competition, with either or both of its two major sides Everton and Liverpool FC representing the city at any time. Between the two clubs, the city has won 27 domestic league titles and 5 European Cups, as well as 12 FA Cup tournaments.

Liverpool is home to a great many art galleries and museums, with venues including Tate Liverpool and William Brown Street; a World Heritage Site that includes the World Museum and the Walker Art Gallery.

Other attractions include The Empire Theatre, which is the largest two-tier auditorium in the UK, and Albert Dock, a retail and tourism destination which is perhaps best known as the scene of Fred Talbot’s floating weather map from daytime TV show This Morning
