Today:

The day will start off dry and bright with some sunshine. Clouding over during the morning with showery rain reaching Dumfries and Galloway, with some heavier outbreaks, and some rain reaching the east this afternoon. Light southerly wind. Maximum Temperature 15 °C.

Tonight:

Any showers at first clearing into the North Sea then dry for a time this evening, some clear spells in Lothians. Cloud and occasional rain returning from the southwest tonight. Minimum Temperature 8 °C.

Tuesday:

Rain for a time in the morning then dry and bright with some sunny spells developing. Strengthening west to southwesterly winds with gales later especially in Lothian. Maximum Temperature 18 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Bright start Wednesday then cloudier with some rain, heavier in west, strengthening southwest winds. Thursday and Friday bright with some sunshine but some blustery showers.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
