Regional forecast for Dumfries, Galloway, Lothian & Borders

This Evening and Tonight:

Dumfries and Galloway holding onto mostly clear skies leading to chilly night but becoming cloudy later. Low cloud will become extensive this evening over eastern Borders and east Lothian, extending to Edinburgh and rest of Lothians and Borders early tonight. Minimum Temperature 1 °C.

Tuesday:

Somewhat cooler and cloudier than recent days but some sunny spells will develop, mainly in the west. Showers will spread northwards during the afternoon and evening. Maximum Temperature 13 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

The weather will become more unsettled and changeable. There will be showers or longer spells of rain with some drier and brighter interludes. Occasionally windy near the coasts.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
