Today:

A bright, chilly start for many with good spells of sunshine and just a few light coastal showers. However cloud bubbles up through the morning with the odd shower developing inland for the afternoon. Mainly light winds. Maximum Temperature 13 °C.

Tonight:

A fine end to the day with some late sunshine around. Then a mainly dry night with long clear spells. A freshening southerly breeze is expected to develop. Minimum Temperature 2 °C.

Saturday:

Bright with some sunny spells, especially towards Edinburgh with the south and west looking cloudier with a few showers. The southerly breeze will become strong at times in coastal parts. Maximum Temperature 14 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

A largely dry, bright and breezy day on Sunday. Monday looks cloudier with outbreaks of rain for a time but Tuesday looks dry with some sunshine.

What are tides?

Tides refer to the rise and fall of a body of water, most commonly seen in the oceans; caused by the interaction between the moon, sun and Earth.

As the positions of Earth, sun and moon change in relation to each other, the gravitational pull and centrifugal forces acting upon the oceans vary and it is these differences that cause fluctuation in the height of the sea which we see at the tides going out and in.

In the UK we mostly experience a semi-diurnal tide which means we experience two high tides and two low tides each day. These occur approximately every 12 hours and 25 minutes.
