General Situation at 1200 UTC on Thu 17 Apr 2014

Low centred to the northeast of Scotland will move away eastwards, allowing a new high to build from the west.

Cape Wrath to Rattray Head including Orkney - Strong winds are forecast

24 hour forecast: West 6 to gale 8, veering northwest 5 or 6, then becoming variable 3 or 4 later. Moderate or rough, occasionally very rough at first in northwest, becoming slight later in Moray Firth. Showers at first. Good.

Outlook:  Variable 3 or 4, becoming south or southwest 4 or 5, then variable 3 or 4 later. Slight or moderate, occasionally rough in northwest. Occasional rain in northwest. Good, occasionally moderate in northwest.

Rattray Head to Berwick upon Tweed - Strong winds are forecast

24 hour forecast: Westerly 5 to 7, occasionally gale 8 in north, veering northwesterly 4 or 5, then becoming variable 2 or 3 later. Slight or moderate, but rough at first near Rattray Head. Showers at first. Good.

Outlook:  Variable 2 or 3, becoming south or southeast 3 or 4. Slight or moderate. Fair. Good.

Berwick upon Tweed to Whitby - Strong winds are forecast

24 hour forecast: West veering north 5 or 6, decreasing 3 or 4 later. Moderate, occasionally slight at first. Showers at first. Good.

Outlook:  North, veering east or southeast, 3 or 4. Slight or moderate. Fair. Good.

Whitby to Gibraltar Point - Strong winds are forecast

24 hour forecast: Southwest 4 or 5, veering northwest 5 or 6, then veering north 4 later. Slight becoming moderate, occasionally rough later in north. Showers at first. Good, occasionally moderate at first.

Outlook:  North veering northeast 3 or 4. Slight or moderate. Fair. Good.

Gibraltar Point to North Foreland - Strong winds are forecast

24 hour forecast: Southwesterly veering northwesterly 4 or 5, then veering northerly 5 or 6 later. Slight, becoming moderate later. Showers at first. Good, occasionally moderate at first.

Outlook:  Northerly veering northeasterly 4 or 5. Slight or moderate. Showers later. Good.

North Foreland to Selsey Bill - Strong winds are forecast

24 hour forecast: Southwesterly veering northwesterly 4 or 5, occasionally 6 in Strait of Dover, veering northeasterly later. Slight or moderate. Showers at first. Good, occasionally moderate at first.

Outlook:  Northeasterly 4 or 5, occasionally 6 in Strait of Dover. Slight or moderate. Showers later. Good.

Selsey Bill to Lyme Regis

24 hour forecast: Southwest 3 or 4, veering northwest 4 or 5, then veering northeast later. Smooth or slight. Showers at first. Good.

Lyme Regis to Lands End including the Isles of Scilly

Lands End to St Davids Head including the Bristol Channel

St Davids Head to Great Orme Head including St Georges Channel

24 hour forecast: West veering northwest 4 or 5, becoming variable 2 or 3 later. Slight or moderate. Showers at first. Good.

Outlook:  Variable 2 or 3, becoming northeast 3 or 4, then variable 2 or 3 later. Smooth or slight. Fair. Good.

Great Orme Head to the Mull of Galloway - Strong winds are forecast

Outlook:  Variable 2 or 3, becoming south or southeast 3 or 4. Smooth or slight in south, slight or moderate in north. Fair. Good.

Mull of Galloway to Mull of Kintyre including the Firth of Clyde and North Channel - Strong winds are forecast

24 hour forecast: West veering northwest 4 or 5, occasionally 6 at first, becoming variable 2 or 3 later. Rough at first near Mull of Kintyre, otherwise slight or moderate. Showers at first. Good.

Outlook:  Variable 2 or 3, becoming south or southeast 3 or 4. Smooth or slight, occasionally moderate near Mull of Kintyre. Fair. Good.

Mull of Kintyre to Ardnamurchan Point - Strong winds are forecast

24 hour forecast: Northwesterly 5 or 6, occasionally 7 in north, decreasing 3 or 4, then becoming variable later. Moderate or rough, becoming slight in shelter. Showers at first. Good.

Outlook:  Variable, becoming south or southeast, 3 or 4. Slight or moderate. Occasional drizzle later in north. Good, occasionally moderate later.

Outlook:  South or southwest 5 or 6, becoming variable 3 or 4 later. Moderate or rough. Fair at first, then rain or drizzle. Moderate or good, occasionally poor later.

Channel Islands

24 hour forecast: Mainly westerly 1 to 3, veering northwest 3 to 4 by evening, perhaps occasionally 5 and veering north to northeast 4 to 5 by morning, further veering northeast 3 to 4 by midday. Smooth or slight becoming slight, locally moderate. Fine, becoming cloudy this evening and mainly fair by morning. Good.

Outlook:  Northeast to east 2 to 4. Slight, locally moderate at times. Mainly fair. Good.
