Inshore Waters Forecast

The inshore waters forecast issued by the Met Office, on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency

For coastal areas up to 12 miles offshore from Saturday 20 March 2010 at 0000 until Sunday 21 March 2010 at 0000

General Situation at 0000 on Sat 20 Mar 2010
A deep area of low pressure over Faeroes will drift slowly eastwards and fill gradually. Another area of low pressure will move northeastwards across England into the North Sea. A weak ridge of high pressure will follow from the west on Sunday before the next Atlantic frontal system affects western and northern areas.

Cape Wrath to Rattray Head including Orkney - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Southwesterly, veering westerly or northwesterly, 5 to 7, but mainly 4 or 5 in south, and in west later. Slight or moderate, but rough or very rough in north at first. Showers, squally at first in north. Moderate or good.
Outlook:  Northwesterly 4 or 5, occasionally 6 in northeast at first, becoming variable 3 or less then southerly 3 or 4. Slight or moderate, but moderate or rough in north. Showers. Good.

Rattray Head to Berwick on Tweed
24 hour forecast: Westerly or southwesterly 3 or 4, occasionally 5 in north. Smooth or slight, occasionally moderate in north at first. Mainly fair, occasional rain in south. Moderate or good.
Outlook:  West or southwest 4 or 5 becoming variable then south, 3 or 4. Smooth or slight. Mainly fair. Good, occasionally moderate later.

Berwick on Tweed to Whitby
24 hour forecast: Variable becoming north or northwest, 3 or 4. Smooth or slight. Occasional rain, fog patches, becoming mainly fair later. Good, becoming moderate or poor later.
Outlook:  West or northwest becoming variable then south, 3 or 4. Smooth or slight. Mainly fair. Moderate or good, occasionally very poor at first.

Whitby to Gibraltar Point
24 hour forecast: Cyclonic becoming northerly, 3 or 4 increasing 5 at times, but southerly in south at first. Smooth or slight. Occasional rain, fog patches. Good becoming moderate or poor, occasionally very poor for a time.
Outlook:  North backing south, 3 or 4. Smooth or slight. Occasional rain, fog patches at first, becoming fair. Moderate or poor, becoming good.

Gibraltar Point to North Foreland
24 hour forecast: Southerly or southwesterly, veering northerly in far north later, 4 or 5. Slight or moderate. Occasional rain, fog patches. Moderate, occasionally very poor.
Outlook:  Cyclonic 3 or 4 becoming northerly 4 or 5, then backing southerly 3 or 4 later. Smooth or slight. Occasional rain or drizzle, becoming fair. Moderate or poor, becoming good.

North Foreland to Selsey Bill - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: South or southwest 5 or 6, decreasing 4 or 5 later. Moderate. Occasional rain, fog patches. Moderate or poor, occasionally very poor.
Outlook:  Southwest veering northwest, then backing south, 3 or 4, occasionally 5 at first. Slight or moderate. Occasional rain or drizzle, becoming fair. Moderate or poor, becoming good.

Selsey Bill to Lyme Regis - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Southerly or southwesterly 4 or 5, increasing 6 at times, veering northwesterly in west later. Moderate. Occasional rain, fog patches at first. Moderate or poor, occasionally very poor at first.
Outlook:  Southwesterly in east just at first, otherwise northwesterly, 4 or 5, decreasing 3 or 4, backing southerly later. Slight or moderate. Mainly fair. Moderate or good.

Lyme Regis to Lands End including the Isles of Scilly - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: South or southwest, veering northwest later, 4 or 5, increasing 6 at times. Moderate or rough. Occasional rain, fog patches at first, becoming fair later. Moderate, occasionally very poor at first, becoming good later.
Outlook:  Northwest 4 or 5, occasionally 6 at first, decreasing 3 or 4 then backing south, increasing 4 or 5 later. Moderate or rough. Mainly fair. Moderate or good.

Lands End to St Davids Head including the Bristol Channel - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: South or southwest, veering northwest, 4 or 5, increasing 6 at times. Smooth or slight in east, moderate or rough in west. Occasional rain, becoming fair later. Moderate or poor, becoming good later.
Outlook:  Northwesterly backing southerly, 3 or 4, occasionally 5 just at first, and increasing 5 in west later. Smooth or slight in east, moderate or rough in west. Mainly fair. Moderate or good.

St Davids Head to Great Ormes Head including St Georges Channel - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Southerly in south at first, otherwise northerly or northeasterly, 4 or 5, increasing 6 at times, decreasing 3 or 4 later. Slight or moderate. Occasional rain, fog patches, becoming fair later. Moderate to very poor, becoming good later.
Outlook:  North backing south, 3 or 4, increasing 5 or 6 later. Slight or moderate. Fair, then occasional rain. Good, becoming moderate or poor.

Great Ormes Head to Mull of Galloway
24 hour forecast: North or northeast 4 or 5, backing northwest 3 or 4 later. Slight or moderate. Occasional rain, becoming fair later. Moderate or poor, becoming good.
Outlook:  Northwesterly backing southerly, 3 or 4, increasing 5 or 6 in west later. Slight or moderate. Fair, then occasional rain. Good, becoming moderate or poor.

Isle of Man
24 hour forecast: Northeast 3 or 4 backing 4 or 5, backing northwest 4 later. Slight or moderate. Rain at first, becoming fair. Moderate or good.
Outlook:  Northwest backing southwest 3 or 4, backing south 5 or 6 later. Slight or moderate, becoming moderate or rough later. Occasional rain. Moderate or good.

Lough Foyle to Carlingford Lough

The Mull of Galloway to Mull of Kintyre including Firth of Clyde

Mull of Kintyre to Ardnamurchan Point
24 hour forecast: Variable 3 or less becoming northwesterly 3 or 4, backing westerly 3 or less later. Rough decreasing moderate. Showers. Moderate or good.
Outlook:  West just at first, otherwise south or southeast, 3 or 4, increasing 5 or 6 later. Moderate or rough. Occasional rain. Moderate or good, occasionally poor.

Ardnamurchan Point to Cape Wrath excluding The Minch - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Westerly or southwesterly 4 or 5, occasionally 6 in north at first, backing southwesterly 3 or 4 later. Rough or very rough, decreasing moderate or rough. Showers. Moderate or good.
Outlook:  Southwest 3 or 4 backing south or southeast 4 or 5, increasing 6 at times. Moderate or rough. Showers or occasional rain. Moderate or good, occasionally poor.

The Minch - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Westerly or southwesterly 4 or 5, occasionally 6 in north at first, backing southwesterly 3 or 4 later. Slight or moderate, but rough in far south at first. Showers. Moderate or good.
Outlook:  Southwest 3 or 4 backing south or southeast 4 or 5, increasing 6 at times. Slight or moderate. Showers or occasional rain. Moderate or good, occasionally poor.

The Channel Islands - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: South 5 locally 6 mid-channel, veering southwest 4 or 5 by evening, further veering west by midnight. Moderate to rather rough. Rain or drizzle at times with a risk of coastal fog patches. Good locally moderate to very poor.
Outlook:  West to northwest 4 or 5 increasing 5 or 6 for time, then decreasing 2 to 4 by midday, backing southwest. Moderate to rather rough, perhaps rough for a time, then slight with a swell. Any rain soon clearing. Good.
