The inshore waters forecast issued by the Met Office, on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency

For coastal areas up to 12 miles offshore from Monday 22 March 2010 at 0600 until Tuesday 23 March 2010 at 0600

A deep area of low pressure will track northwards to the west of the United Kingdom.

Cape Wrath to Rattray Head including Orkney - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Southeasterly 4 or 5, increasing 5 to 7, veering southwesterly 4 or 5, occasionally 6 in north. Slight or moderate, occasionally rough to west and north of Orkney. Occasional rain, then showers. Good, occasionally moderate for a time.
Outlook:  Southwesterly 4 or 5, occasionally 6 in north, backing southeasterly 5 or 6, occasionally 7 later. Slight or moderate, occasionally rough to west and north of Orkney. Showers, rain later. Good, becoming moderate later.

Rattray Head to Berwick on Tweed - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Southeast 4 or 5, increasing 5 to 7, veering southwest 4 or 5. Slight or moderate. Occasional rain, then showers. Good, occasionally moderate for a time.
Outlook:  Southwest backing southeast 4 or 5, occasionally 6 later. Slight or moderate. Fair, rain later. Good, becoming moderate later.

Berwick on Tweed to Whitby - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: South 5 or 6, veering southwest 4 or 5. Slight or moderate. Occasional rain, fair later. Moderate becoming good.
Outlook:  Southwest backing southeast 4 or 5, occasionally 6 later. Slight or moderate. Fair, rain later. Good, becoming moderate later.

Whitby to Gibraltar Point - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: South 4 or 5, increasing 5 or 6, veering southwest 4 or 5 later. Slight or moderate. Fair, then rain for a time. Good becoming moderate occasionally poor for a time.
Outlook:  Southwest backing southeast, 4 or 5 occasionally 6 later. Slight or moderate. Fair, rain later. Good, becoming moderate later.

Gibraltar Point to North Foreland - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Southwesterly 4 or 5, increasing 6 for a time, decreasing 3 or 4 later. Smooth or slight. Rain for a time later. Good, becoming moderate or poor for a time later.
Outlook:  Southwesterly 3 or 4, backing southeasterly 4 or 5. Smooth or slight. Fair, rain later. Good, becoming moderate later.

North Foreland to Selsey Bill - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Southwesterly 4 or 5, increasing 7 for a time in east, decreasing 3 or 4 later. Smooth or slight. Rain for a time later, fog patches later. Moderate or poor, occasionally very poor later.

Selsey Bill to Lyme Regis - Strong winds are forecast

Lyme Regis to Lands End including the Isles of Scilly - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Southwesterly 5 to 7, veering westerly 4 or 5, backing southeasterly 5 or 6 later. Moderate, but rough in west. Rain for a time. Moderate or poor, becoming good.
Outlook:  Southeasterly veering southerly 5 or 6, occasionally 7 in west. Moderate, but rough in west. Occasional rain. Moderate or poor.

Lands End to St Davids Head including the Bristol Channel - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Southwesterly 5 to 7, occasionally gale 8 around St Davids Head, decreasing 4 or 5, backing southeasterly later. Moderate, but rough in west. Rain for a time. Moderate or poor, becoming good.

St Davids Head to Great Ormes Head including St Georges Channel - Strong winds are forecast

Great Ormes Head to Mull of Galloway - Strong winds are forecast

Ardnamurchan Point to Cape Wrath excluding The Minch - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Southeasterly 7 or gale 8, occasionally severe gale 9 to west of Outer Hebrides at first, veering southwesterly 5 to 7, backing southerly later. Rough or very rough. Occasional rain then squally showers, rain later. Moderate or good, occasionally poor.

The Minch - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Southeasterly 7 or gale 8, occasionally severe gale 9 to west of Outer Hebrides at first, veering southwesterly 5 to 7, backing southerly later. Slight or moderate, occasionally rough in south. Occasional rain then squally showers, rain later. Moderate or good, occasionally poor.
Outlook:  Southerly 5 to 7 occasionally gale 8 in west for a time, decreasing 4 or 5 later. Slight or moderate, occasionally rough in south. Rain at times. Moderate occasionally poor.

The Channel Islands - Strong winds are forecast
24 hour forecast: Southerly 4 to 5, perhaps locally 6 mid-channel in the afternoon, veering southwest to west early evening decreasing 2 to 3, becoming variable overnight then southeast by morning 3 to 4. Slight in the south at first and again later, otherwise moderate, locally rather rough for a time mid-channel. Outbreaks of rain from late afternoon with mist patches and a risk of fog patches. Good becoming moderate to poor, perhaps very poor from late afternoon.
Outlook:  Southeast to south 3 to 4, perhaps locally 5 towards mid-channel at times. Slight, locally moderate with a low swell. Cloudy with a little rain or drizzle at times with mist and a risk of fog patches some fair periods in the afternoon and evening. Moderate to poor, becoming moderate to good for a time.
