First widespread gales of the year

Gale force winds bring stormy seas

3 February 2011 - Our forecasters are predicting a spell of wet and very windy weather over the coming days, in contrast to the recent spell of mainly dry and settled conditions.

Met Office Chief Forecaster, Martin Young said: "Thursday and Friday will see very strong winds across many parts of the UK. On Thursday night, northern and western Scotland will bear the brunt of the strongest gusts and heavy rain."

Temperatures will vary widely across the UK on Friday and be cold enough for some snow in northern Scotland, which could cause difficult travel conditions. Elsewhere it will be much milder with temperatures into double figures, despite the wind.

Over the weekend, Wales and North West England are likely to see spells of heavy rain at times.
