Aeronautical Meteorology Training

Our aeronautical meteorology courses conform with the latest World Meteorological Organization training and education guidelines. We offer training for both observers and forecasters.

Aeronautical meteorology training - girls at computers

Our courses are vocational and focused and can be delivered anywhere in the world. We teach international best-practice techniques in forecasting and observing and review the latest developments in aeronautical meteorology.

Aeronautical Meteorological Personnel (AMP) Competency Standards

The Met Office College provides UK Civil Aviation Authority audited aeronautical meteorology training that conforms with the new World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Competency Standards for AMP. Alongside aeronautical meteorology training the Met Office College can also provide a range of consultancy services to help aeronautical meteorological service providers enhance flight safety through compliance with these regulations. These services include:

  • providing guidance to regulatory authorities on how best to assess aeronautical meteorological service providers against the AMP Competency Standards, including documentation as part of a Quality Management System (QMS);
  • assessment of aeronautical meteorological service provider's forecasters and observers against the AMP Competency Standards including recommendations to address any gaps identified.

Our courses include:

Aeronautical Meteorology Forecasting

The Aeronautical Meteorological Forecasting course is designed to help operational staff improve their awareness and forecasting of aviation weather-impact variables.

Observing

The Met Office College provides a range of observer training courses that are suitable for aeronautical meteorological staff from other meteorological service providers.

International Observer Training - a case study

In 2009 the Italian Air Traffic Control and Air Navigation organisation (ENAV) was about to embark on an extensive observer recruitment programme which involved training a large number of observers. After their training, the observers would be required to provide METAR reports at main airports throughout mainland Italy, Sardinia and Sicily.

ENAV contacted the Met Office to discuss on-site observer training options. For more information on what training options were chosen please read the full International observer training case study (PDF, 130 kB) .

The Met Office College provides a wide range of courses. To receive more information about training please register your details.
