Today:

Southern England starts the day cloudy with patchy drizzle. Elsewhere, largely dry with sunny spells. Later, rain spreads into Northern Ireland, southern Scotland and northern England, with blustery showers and possible thunderstorms in northwest Scotland. Very warm southeast, average elsewhere.

Tonight:

Heavy rain continues to affect central areas before slowly shifting towards the southeast later. Clearer spells developing in the north with blustery showers for much of western Scotland. Mild.

Friday:

Rain clears the southeast through the morning, leaving a mostly dry day with bright spells. Blustery showers affect northern areas, easing later. Strong winds in the north. Temperatures near normal.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Dry on Saturday with sunny spells. Sunday brings heavy rain and strong winds to northern areas, while the south stays drier. Monday remains bright but showery, with temperatures near average.

Overall, a fairly unsettled period is likely, with many places seeing showers or longer spells of rain at times, interspersed by drier periods. Rain will likely be most frequent across northern and western areas, while the south and east are more likely to see longer drier interludes. There is also the potential for some strong and gusty winds, particularly in the northwest. Temperatures are likely to be near average, although brief warm or very warm spells are possible, especially in the south.

Confidence is low from mid-September onwards, however a gradual transition towards slightly more settled conditions for the second half of the month is currently signalled. The distribution of rainfall is uncertain at this range, but drier conditions compared to earlier in the month are likely for most, with any wetter spells generally more likely across the northwest. Temperatures are likely to be around average overall, although some warm spells are possible, particularly in the south.
