Storm Darragh brings widespread disruption across the UK.
A very windy day with widespread gales and severe gales, and storm force winds in the west. Outbreaks of rain spread steadily eastwards, heavy at times and falling as snow across the hills in the north.
Gales and severe gales easing but remaining very windy. Heavy rain continues to affect central and eastern parts overnight, with further blustery showers in the northwest. Drier in the southwest.
Strong winds and heavy rain linger across the east, however a drier and more settled day in the west with occasional sunny spells. Still rather breezy at times.
A settled start to the week. Light winds for many and staying mainly dry however turning increasingly cloudy with patchy rain and drizzle lingering along the north and south coast.
Updated:
High pressure looks like dominating the UK's weather at first, bringing plenty of dry but rather cold days and nights. Cloud amounts will be variable, but some clear or sunny spells are likely. Overnight frosts along with fog patches are probable for some regions, the fog slow to clear by day. Over the weekend, a change to more unsettled conditions appears likely, with a chance of stronger winds and some rain moving southeast. This sets the scene for a more changeable second week with an increased likelihood of wet and windy spells, these especially towards the north while southern areas have a better chance of more prolonged drier, settled weather. Temperatures will vary around average with both some colder and milder spells likely through this period.
Updated:
Mainly unsettled conditions appear likely for most, with spells of wind and rain followed by showers affecting most areas but especially towards the north or northwest. Some sleet and snow is also possible at times, especially on high ground in the north. However, there are also some signs that more settled conditions are possible at times, these perhaps most likely across the south late in December or into early January. Temperatures are likely to be around average overall, with any more settled interludes bringing a risk of frost and fog.
