Awards and recognition
Over the last few years, our colleagues have been recognised in many ways for their expertise and work:
- Alison Davies and Maureen (Mo) Smith were recognised in the 2018 New Year’s Honours list
- Jim Sharp, Richard Graham and Peter Trevelyan have received OBEs in recognition of their very different areas of work at the Met Office.
There have been many other accolades in recent years including:
- Overall winner of the Most Sustainable Public Sector Organisation in the Public Sector Sustainability Awards.
- The European Met Society's Outreach and Communication Award for the Met Office STEM Outreach Programme.
- The Best use of Social Media in a Crisis at the UK Social Media Communications Awards and the Social Buzz Awards.
- The Best use of Social Media in the Public Sector in the Computer Weekly Social Media Awards.
- Our Service Transition Release Management Team won the Team of the Year award at the IT Service Management Forum.
- Dr Nick Dunstone was awarded the Outstanding Young Scientist Award for Climate Sciences by the European Geophysical Union.
- A Marketing on Mobile Award for Best Public Sector Mobile Strategy
- The No.1 most visited Government website by Experian Hitwise at the top 10 website awards.
Well-being and healthy living
We have a sports and social club at our head office, as well as a health club with a wide range of fitness equipment, activities and classes. Furthermore we offer a wide range of bikes for staff hire, and healthy eating choices in the staff restaurant. We also run a Cyclescheme and car share scheme to encourage environmentally friendly travel.
We have established an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) who offer a 24/7 professional counselling service to staff members in times of need. We also have a dignity and respect at work team who can offer confidential support.
The Met Office affords all members of staff the opportunity of flexibility within their role. For example, we can offer flexible working hours (subject to internal manager agreement). This includes selective home working options and compressed or staggered hours. Furthermore we offer a salary sacrifice option such as Childcare vouchers which can be used to pay any Ofsted (or equivalent) registered carer, including nurseries, childminders, nannies, play schemes etc.
Health and Safety
We are committed to the provision of a safe and healthy working environment. This includes a range of Health and Safety policies and procedures and training for all.
Diversity and Equality, and employee feedback

Every year we carry out an Employee Attitude Survey (EAS) that forms part of the Civil Service People Survey which allows comparison between different organisations. In 2018, 74% of staff responded and we publish the full results.
