OpenRunway™
OpenRunway™ is an online, site-specific weather forecasting platform to help airports and airlines make weather sensitive decisions.
This service is due to retire in Spring 2026 and from Autumn 2025 will transition to the Met Office Aeronautical Visualisation Service (MAVIS®). For service updates, please contact your Account Manager.
It provides real-time weather information as well as forecasts on multiple timeframes. This enables decisions to be made around the treatment of runways, opening runways during marginal weather and de-icing operations, minimising disruption to passengers and save costs.
Key features include:
- Map visualisation of forthcoming weather with satellite and weather radar overlays.
- Colour-coded hour-by-hour summary for the next 24 hours detailing current weather and forecast specific to airports.
- Options to integrate runway surface temperature.
- Ability to set bespoke thresholds.
- Map visualisation of aerodrome warnings in the UK.
- Responsive design - accessible from mobile and tablet devices.
- Multiple airport locations can be added.
- 24/7 meterological and technical support.
OpenRunway™ additional services:
Aircraft De-icing Service
A proven and unique service offering forecasts of aircraft icing conditions for airports worldwide.
Ground de-icing of aircraft is commonly performed in both commercial and general aviation. An instruction to de-ice aircraft can reduce delays and cut de-icing costs. This also reduces environmental impact by cutting the usage and wastage of de-icing fluid.
The de-icing forecast service provides forecast parameters of temperature, dewpoint, snow and weather type, delivered via web interface, along with an email and SMS instruction to carry out de-icing of fleet on the day when icing conditions are expected.
Aviation Outlook Planners (2-5 day)
Available as an OpenRunway™ add on, or as a standalone product.
Table of days 2-5 forecast of varying parameters with customisable RAG thresholds for your location.
- Day 2 and 3 at 3 hourly timesteps.
- Day 4 and 5 at 6 hourly timesteps.
Aviation 5 Day Forecast (forecaster produced)
A detailed PDF forecast written by a meteorologist, comprising of varying weather parameters with customisable RAG thresholds for your location.
The 1–5 day forecast is produced in a PDF format by the forecast team and provides a description to complement the OpenRunway™ portal. To achieve continuity between Airport TAF and warnings, the 1-5-day forecast can be amended if there is a significant change in the forecast of snow, ice and ground temperatures. The Operational Meteorologist will provide a clear outline of the changes made on the amended product.
