Met Office daily weather: Heavy showers to start the day

Friday will begin with rain across parts of the south-west, some of which may be heavy or thundery at times. A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued until 12pm. This rain will gradually spread eastwards across other southern areas during the morning, before clearing away early in the afternoon. In the wake of the rain, blustery showers will follow for a time, particularly in the west and south-west, but these will also ease as the day progresses.

Elsewhere, showers are likely for windward coasts and hills, with some of these developing further inland. There is a risk that a few of these showers could turn heavy, with hail and thunder possible in places. However, showers will generally become less frequent later in the day, allowing for some drier and brighter spells to develop. Temperatures will be close to the seasonal average, providing a typical late August feel.

Overnight, most showers will die out away from north-western coastal areas, although a few well-scattered showers may continue to affect some western coasts further south. Central and eastern parts of the country will see increasing amounts of clear sky, making for a more settled night. Temperatures will remain similar to those experienced during the day.

Outlook for Saturday

Saturday will start with clear intervals and a few showers in the north and west. Cloud will increase from the west as outbreaks of rain spread north-eastwards to all parts, with the heaviest rain likely in western areas. By later in the day, it should become drier with perhaps some late sunshine and a few blustery showers in Northern Ireland, Wales and south-west England. The Northern Isles are expected to remain largely dry until the evening.

Winds will be light at first but will become moderate to fresh, and locally strong along western coasts, with a risk of gales. Temperatures will be near or just below average, especially under persistent rain.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Honor Criswick, said: “It will feel a little cooler and fresher to start the day on Friday. Still a chance of some heavy downpours across the southeast, Sussex, and Kent, and eventually pushing up into parts of East Anglia. Once again, heavy, possibly thundery before this system eventually clears its way into the North Sea. And it's going to be another day of showery outbreaks once again, particularly in the west and the northwest where we could see some heavy downpours.

“But there should be some bright and sunny interludes in between. Temperatures will be fairly similar. Highs could reach around 21 to 22°C and still always that little bit fresher across the far north. Now, low pressure remains the dominant feature for our weather. A slight ridge of high pressure means a bright start Saturday morning, but soon being replaced by another system pushing its way in from the west, bringing widespread outbreaks of rain, possibly heavy and thundery once again, and also some quite blustery winds, particularly across the far northwest of the country.”
