Met Office daily weather: A change in conditions across the weekend as Claudia fizzles out

Saturday will see most of Scotland enjoying dry weather with sunny spells, a welcome break from recent unsettled conditions. Elsewhere, much of England, Wales, and the south of Northern Ireland will be under widespread low cloud, with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. These damp conditions are expected to become lighter and more patchy as the day progresses, though the far south may still see the odd showery burst. Winds, which have been brisk, will continue to ease through the day.

Temperatures will reflect the changing air masses: the far south is likely to remain mild, with values reaching the mid-teens Celsius. Further north, it will feel cooler, with temperatures near or just below average, and the north of Scotland seeing mid-single figure highs.

As night falls, clearer skies will extend southwards from Scotland into Northern Ireland and northern England, allowing temperatures to drop and a risk of frost to develop in these areas. Meanwhile, low cloud is likely to persist further south, with patchy drizzle and the chance of showery rain in the far south.

Outlook for Sunday

Sunday starts overcast in the south, with pockets of drizzle and some hill fog. However, conditions will steadily improve from the north, although it may take until evening for the far south to see any significant brightening. Most other areas will be dry with clear or sunny spells, though a band of showers in the extreme north will move southwards into central parts by the end of the day. Some of these showers may turn wintry over the Scottish mountains, with sleet or snow showers likely for Shetland by evening.

It will be a widely cold start, with frost away from the south, and daytime temperatures will feel rather cold to near average. Winds will be breezy in the south, strengthening across the far northeast later.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Alex Deakin, said: “On Saturday, we've kind of got a three-way split. Much of the south dry, chance of one or two showers in the southwest, but certainly a drier day for South Wales, southern parts of the Midlands. There will still be some rain from storm Claudia from a weather front draped across northeast England, but nothing like as heavy as the rain we're seeing over the next 12 hours or so.

“Again much of Scotland Northern Ireland staying dry with the Highlands having a cracking day with plenty of sunshine. That brisk easterly wind will again be noticeable on those North Sea coasts. Feeling pretty chilly here. But again in the south bit of brightness 15 16°C is still very mild. Been a very mild start to November. But it's already turned colder further north and the colder air will win out as we head through Saturday night and into Sunday. That rain continuing to fizzle out and the rainband just as well as fizzling out starting to push a little further south.”
