Met Office daily weather: A bright and breezy start to the week

Monday will begin on a cloudy and breezy note across much of Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England, with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, particularly in north-western areas. Further south, conditions will be brighter, with sunny spells developing, especially across central and eastern England. The afternoon will see the sunniest weather in these regions, as well as in eastern Scotland, where it will feel warm for the time of year.

Later in the day, an area of heavier rain accompanied by coastal gales will affect the far north-west. Temperatures will be above average in the sunshine, but the north-west will feel cooler in the wind and rain.

Overnight, rain, which will be heavy at times, will continue to affect the far north and north-west, where it will remain windy with coastal gales. This rain will gradually move south-eastwards across Scotland and Northern Ireland later in the night. Elsewhere, it will be largely dry with variable amounts of cloud, though cloud will thicken in the west and southwest, bringing some drizzle by dawn. Winds will be light in the south, and there is a risk of isolated fog patches forming under any breaks in the cloud.

Outlook for Tuesday

On Tuesday, a band of rain and drizzle will sink slowly south into northern England and north Wales. Behind this, sunny spells will develop across Scotland and Northern Ireland, although a few showers are likely in the north-west. Central, southern, and eastern England, as well as the rest of Wales, will see variable, often large amounts of cloud, but there will be some sunshine, mainly in the east. Temperatures will be nearer average than on Monday, but it will still feel warm in any sunshine.

Tuesday night into Wednesday morning will see a narrow, fragmenting band of rain moving slowly south across England and Wales, with only small amounts expected. It will remain mostly cloudy and mild ahead of this, but it will turn chilly behind the rain in the north, with rural grass frost and a few fog patches forming, mainly in southern Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England. North-west Scotland will remain breezy with a few showers.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Ellie Glaisyer, said: “Monday morning sees a bit of a cloudier and damp start across the northwest of the country. Further south though, perhaps a few mist and fog patches first thing, but they should clear pretty quickly through this morning, leaving plenty of prolonged sunshine on offer for much of England and Wales through this afternoon.

“That cloud does continue though across western parts of Scotland bringing outbreaks of quite persistent mostly light rain and drizzle though some heavier bursts are possible particularly as we go through the afternoon and the winds will be picking up here too with those southerly, south-westerly winds. Temperatures on Monday will be above what we saw over the weekend. And highs in the south of 20°C, 21°C, perhaps even 22°C and even across eastern parts of Scotland we could see temperatures reaching into the low 20s.

“Through Monday evening though the area of rain that we see across northwest Scotland does continue to push its way north and eastwards. Once again some outbreaks of heavy rain here are possible but then see a more organised area of rain, a weather front arriving across the northwest that's slowly sinking its way south and eastwards as we go into the early hours of Tuesday morning and allowing some cloud to build across the southwest too, filtering in across much of England and Wales into the early hours of the morning.

“Some outbreaks of showery rain are possible in the west and with quite a bit more cloud around that does mean a milder night to come compared to last night. Temperatures widely holding up in the double figures. Maybe one or two rural spots across the very far southeast dropping a little lower than that under any clear skies. But otherwise, that does mean quite a mild start to the day on Tuesday.”
