Met Office daily weather: High pressure building through the week
High pressure is set to build across the UK this week, providing some calmer conditions
The weather across the United Kingdom on Tuesday 7 October will be marked by a band of rain and drizzle gradually moving southwards into northern England and north Wales. As this rain band progresses, brighter conditions are expected to develop across Scotland and Northern Ireland, where sunny spells will break through, although a few showers are likely in the northwest.
Elsewhere, much of central, southern, and eastern England, as well as the remainder of Wales, will experience variable and often large amounts of cloud. However, there will be some sunshine, particularly in eastern areas. Temperatures are expected to be closer to the seasonal average than on Monday, but it will still feel pleasantly warm in any sunshine that does occur.

Overnight, the narrow band of rain will continue to sink slowly south across England and Wales, though it will become increasingly fragmented and amounts will be small. Ahead of this, skies will remain mostly cloudy and mild. However, behind the rain band, conditions will turn noticeably chillier, especially in the north. Rural areas of Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England may see a grass frost develop, and a few fog patches are likely to form, mainly in southern Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England. It will be breezy in north and west Scotland, with a few showers persisting.
Outlook for Wednesday
Wednesday will begin with the possibility of a few fog patches in the south, ahead of a band of mostly light rain and drizzle that will continue to move south-eastwards, eventually clearing the south coast later in the day. Behind this, a mixture of clear or sunny spells is expected, though showers or showery rain will affect the north and northwest. It will be windy across much of Scotland, and daytime temperatures will remain close to average for the time of year.
Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Honor Criswick, said: “Mostly dry, settled conditions, even with some sunny spells at times, but that's away from the northwest this morning. Outbreaks of rain pushing into Scotland, Northern Ireland, eventually pushing into northern parts of England and Wales through the course of the afternoon. Mostly light rain and drizzle, but it could be quite persistent through the course of the day. Eventually brightening up across Scotland, Northern Ireland by this afternoon.
“Elsewhere, we'll see a mix of clouds, some brighter spells, perhaps more cloud than we saw yesterday afternoon. So, temperatures won't get quite as high, but it should still feel warm and pleasant in the sunshine. Temperatures reaching around 17 to 18° C in the southeast. Now, this band of rain does stay with us through the course of the evening, eventually pushing its way southwards, but it's a fairly weak feature.
“Only really light outbreaks of rain and drizzle starting to push into parts of England and Wales, and plenty of cloud to the south of this. But to the north, however, plenty of clear skies, which means temperatures are going to slip away here. It’ll be feeling much chillier with a chance we could see some isolated spots of frost.”
