Met Office daily weather: Settled conditions, sunny spells, and chilly nights on the way

Settled conditions, sunny spells, and chilly nights with patchy rural frost are all in store over the next couple of days, with the chance of isolated showers in some regions.

Wednesday brings a largely settled spell of weather across the UK, with any early fog patches, mainly affecting northern England and eastern Scotland, clearing quickly to reveal a dry day for most. Sunny spells will develop widely, though there remains a chance of a few light showers in southern areas. Breezy conditions are expected in the southeast and far northwest, but temperatures will generally be close to the seasonal average.

As we move into Wednesday night, clear spells will persist for many, with some residual cloud lingering. Away from the southeast and far northwest, where breezes and thicker cloud continue, patchy rural frost and a few fog patches are likely to develop. In the far northwest, cloud may be thick enough to bring the odd spot of rain. Temperatures will recover to around average for most, though the far southeast may see slightly suppressed values due to showers and stronger winds.

Outlook for Thursday

Thursday continues the theme of settled weather, with any early mist or fog patches steadily lifting to leave a predominantly dry day. Variable cloud and sunny spells are expected, although the extreme northwest and far southeast may be cloudier at times, with the possibility of a little rain or the odd shower. Breezy conditions will persist in the east, southeast, and far north and northwest. Daytime temperatures will remain near average, but overnight conditions will be chilly, with patchy rural frost likely under the influence of a high-pressure ridge.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Alex Burkill, said: “So, as we go through Wednesday morning, most places will stay dry with some bright sunny weather around, and by the afternoon we’re not expecting much, if any, rain. just one or two spots here or there if the clouds are thick enough.

“But, most places staying dry. And yes, there will be more cloud bubbling up at times and so it's not going to be quite as sunny as it will have been through the morning for most. But there will still be some bright sunny breaks around.

“That sunshine's important when it comes to the temperatures. Mid to high teens quite widely always feeling warmest where you get that sunshine and away from the east-southeast where we have some blustery winds. The winds also picking up a little bit across the far northwest.”
