Met Office daily weather: Mostly dry with sunshine but feeling fresher

Friday will bring largely dry conditions across the UK, with variable cloud and sunny spells expected for many areas. However, parts of western England and Wales may see thicker cloud moving south-eastwards, accompanied by isolated showers. The far northeast will remain breezy and notably cooler, while elsewhere temperatures will feel warmer and closer to seasonal averages.

During the evening and overnight, cloud will continue to dominate across much of England and Wales, with the possibility of isolated showers drifting south. Clear spells will develop intermittently, particularly in the west. The northeast of Scotland will turn chilly once again, with temperatures dipping into low single figures and a risk of localised rural air frost. Elsewhere, it will be a milder night.

The warmest conditions through Friday will be found in southwest England and southeast Wales, where highs of 22–24°C are likely. However, cloud cover will suppress temperatures across Northern Ireland.

Outlook for Saturday

Saturday will continue the trend of variable cloud cover, with the chance of drizzle on windward hills and coastal areas during the night and morning. Mist and fog patches may form overnight where cloud breaks persist. A few light showers could develop inland during the day, though the majority of locations will remain dry.

Winds will generally be light, with a moderate breeze around western coasts. Daytime temperatures will climb slowly from average to rather warm, reaching the high teens to low 20s Celsius widely. Sheltered glens in Scotland may experience air frost overnight.

Looking ahead to Sunday, eastern and northeastern areas will warm significantly compared to Saturday, with localised fohn effects potentially lifting temperatures to the mid-20s Celsius as far north as the Moray coast.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Alex Burkill, said: “If you're hoping for some largely dry weather as we go into the long bank holiday weekend, we'll have some pretty good news for you. Most places are going to stay generally dry. Some sunshine will be breaking through coastal parts of Wales, southwest England, and elsewhere. A few brighter, sunnier breaks are quite likely through the afternoon, but often quite cloudy and that cloud could be thick enough for a few spots of rain, mainly Northern Ireland perhaps, and even elsewhere. One or two spots can't be ruled out.

“ Now, under the cloud, it's not going to feel especially warm for the time of year, but where we get the sunshine, temperatures are going to be getting into the low 20s, 22°C, 23°C perhaps. And worth also bearing in mind down the eastern side, we have that northerly breeze pushing in. So, that's going to keep things a fair bit cooler, feeling fresher for sure here.

“Later on, more cloud for many of us as we go through the evening, but still there will be some breaks around. So, not necessarily wall-to-wall cloudy skies. And actually, as we go overnight, a few more breaks in the cloud are quite likely. A mostly dry night for many of us. A bit of rain perhaps where the clouds thicken up in a few spots. And do watch out, there could be a couple of mist and fog patches first thing tomorrow morning. But these will quite quickly clear and then tomorrow on the whole quite a similar day to today really.

“Again, quite a bit of cloud for many of us particularly across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Bit more sunshine though on offer across parts of Scotland and also into northwest England. Still need to watch out. There could be a bit of drizzly rain here and there, but most places having a largely dry day now. Temperatures are going to be rising as we go into the bank holiday weekend. They're going to be relatively similar to Friday for many of us, but perhaps a degree or so higher, but it's always going to be where you get that sunshine that it's going to feel warmest. It will be starting to turn ever so slightly less fresh, less cool across those eastern coastal parts as those winds start to drop out.

“Then as we go into the bank holiday weekend, like I said, high pressure is going to be firmly in control. So, lots of dry weather around. It's probably going to be a bit sunnier than it is through today and tomorrow. So, with that sunshine, then it's going to be feeling warmer as well. We do need to cater for some showery burst to push through. Some question marks as to exactly how many showers we're going to see, but we could see a few at times. Most of us will avoid them though and have a largely fine weekend.”
