Met Office daily weather: Unsettled midweek with showers and thunderstorms for some

Wednesday will bring a mix of sunshine and showers across the UK, with the most unsettled conditions expected in western and southwestern areas. Scattered showers will develop through the morning, becoming more widespread into the afternoon across parts of Wales, southern and central England. Some of these showers are likely to turn heavy, with a risk of thunderstorms, particularly during the afternoon and early evening. Elsewhere, conditions will remain more settled, with variable cloud cover and only a few light showers.

Temperatures on Wednesday will be close to seasonal averages, with highs reaching 25-26°C in the southeast under brighter skies. Elsewhere, temperatures will be more modest but generally comfortable for the time of year.

Through Wednesday night, showers will gradually fade, although a few may persist across East Anglia and the far southwest of England. Cloud will increase across northwestern Scotland, thick enough at times to produce some drizzle. Light winds and clearing skies in the west may allow for the formation of isolated fog patches. Overnight temperatures will be near or slightly above average, making for a mild night.

Outlook for Thursday

Thursday will begin on a cloudy note, particularly across eastern areas, including eastern England, where showery outbreaks of rain are expected. Some of this rain may be heavy at times, though the risk of embedded thunderstorms is very low. Elsewhere, a few scattered light showers may develop, but many areas will remain dry with sunny intervals, especially in the west.

Later in the day, cloud will increase across Northern Ireland and western Scotland, bringing patchy rain and drizzle. Winds will be light to moderate for most, though it may feel breezier along eastern coasts and in the far northwest by evening.

Temperatures will remain close to average, though it may feel cooler in the southeast under persistent cloud and showers. Some western areas may enjoy warmer spells in any sunshine.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Alex Deakin, said: “Lots of places seeing lots of cloud on Wednesday, but maybe a bit brighter for parts of northern England and the Midlands compared to today. A better chance of seeing some lengthier spells of sunshine. But any sunshine may well spark some heavy showers tomorrow for East Anglia and southernmost counties of England.

“The potential for some pretty lively downpours. Slow-moving thunderstorms are possible, but they will be hit and miss across these areas of southern England up to East Anglia, but it could drop a lot of rain in a short space of time, potentially causing a bit of disruption.

“Generally, a lot of cloud elsewhere, but some sunny spells, especially around coast. Probably not as many showers for Northern Ireland. Maybe a few more tomorrow over the southernmost parts of Scotland. The wind's fairly light, so if you see some sunshine, temperatures feeling quite pleasant into the low 20s, maybe 24°C, 25°C across the southeast. But obviously, if you get caught in a downpour, it will feel cooler than that.

“Not a great deal of change through Wednesday evening. Still a potential for some heavy showers over southern England up to East Anglia. A few more showers drifting into northern England and southern Scotland, but mostly the showers further west tending to fade and we'll have some clearer spells.”
