Met Office daily weather: A mixture of weather on the way

Tuesday brings a mix of weather across the UK, with variable cloud cover and mostly dry conditions for many. Inland areas, particularly across the west and centre of the country, can expect clear or sunny spells, making for a bright but brisk day. However, windward coasts, especially those facing east, will see scattered showers, and the wind will be fresh to strong along eastern and southeastern coasts.

Temperatures will be slightly lower than on Monday and below average for the time of year. Most places will see highs of 7 to 8°C, especially along windward coasts away from the north and the larger towns and cities of the southeast. The continued cold air from the previous 12 hours will make it feel even cooler, so wrapping up warm is advised.

As night falls, clear spells will persist for many, with showers in the east gradually dying out. After midnight, cloud will increase in the west, bringing some rain to Northern Ireland and the west of Scotland towards dawn. A widespread frost is expected, which could be moderate in places, and a few fog patches may develop. The coldest spots, particularly in the glens of Scotland, could see temperatures dipping as low as -6 or -8°C, while some forecast models suggest even lower minima, though these are likely overestimates.

Outlook for Wednesday

Wednesday starts mostly dry and fair for all but the far northwest. Cloud will increase from the west, with outbreaks of rain moving eastwards—these may be persistent and locally heavy over some western hills and parts of the far north. As the rain moves east, it is likely to become lighter and more drizzly, with the far southeast and some sheltered eastern areas remaining dry into the evening.

Winds will be moderate to fresh, locally strong along northwestern coasts, but lighter in the southeast, increasing later. Temperatures will be near normal for most, though it will feel locally mild in the west and rather cold in parts of the east.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Alex Deakin, said: “It'll feel pretty fresh on Tuesday morning. The winds won't be as strong, however, there'll be some showers of rain affecting Pembrokeshire and Cornwall and still some showers through the day coming into parts of northeast England, but not as many as Monday. One or two getting into Norfolk, but a much drier day for eastern Scotland.

“For a good part of the country, it's a fine late autumn day with plenty of sunny spells. It is going to be on the cold side, however, as the air is coming down from the north. But although temperatures are actually lower tomorrow, because there'll be more sunshine, if you get out through the middle of the day, it probably won't feel as chilly. So, quite a bit of sunshine around on Tuesday and that will then lead to a pretty clear night. So, the frost more widespread Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.”
