The middle of the week brings a mix of rain, occasional brightness, and increasing winds as several weather systems move across the UK.

Tuesday begins on a rather dull note across much of the country, accompanied by patchy rain and drizzle. More persistent rain is expected across northern areas, particularly the northeast, where it may linger through the first part of the day.

Through the afternoon, another band of rain pushes in from the west across southern parts of the UK. Behind this, brighter intervals will develop, but these will be punctuated by heavy showers. Winds will remain breezy across the north and later also toward the far southwest. Temperatures stay close to average overall, but it will feel mildest across southern England.

The unsettled theme continues overnight, with most areas staying mostly cloudy and seeing further outbreaks of rain or showers. The heaviest and most persistent rain is likely across northern and eastern Scotland, where precipitation may turn to snow over high ground as colder air feeds in. It will also become increasingly windy across the north and the far southwest.

Outlook for Wednesday

Wednesday brings another day of widespread unsettled weather. Persistent rain continues across eastern Scotland, with hill snow becoming more widespread through the day. Northern England, southern Scotland and Northern Ireland also see spells of rain.

Separately, another area of rain moves eastwards across southern England. Although some central parts may experience brief drier interludes, sunshine will be limited. Much of Scotland will be windy, with a pronounced wind chill, and some English Channel coasts may also see gusty conditions. Temperatures remain mild in the south but rather cold across the north.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Aidan McGivern, said: “A gloomy start to Tuesday, but not a particularly cold one, with temperatures generally between 6 and 9°C. We begin the day with persistent rain across Scotland and northern England, and it’s eastern Scotland once again where the rain will continue to accumulate after what has already been a very wet few weeks. A yellow warning is in place here. Snow is possible over the peaks, mainly above 400 to 500 metres.

“It will also be damp across Northern Ireland and increasingly so for western England and Wales as another band of showery rain moves through. This clears reasonably quickly, followed by gusty winds, and it stays windy in the northeast of Scotland.

Southeast England will be a little drier and brighter, although a few showers are still possible. Temperatures remain similar to Monday: 6 to 9°C in the north and 11 to 12°C further south.

“Through the evening and overnight, areas of rain continue to edge north-eastwards, with more showery rain pushing in. Some heavy downpours are likely once again for the southwest and for South Wales. And if you’re tired of this unsettled spell, there is some hope on the horizon, with something a little less wet expected later in the week and into the weekend.”
