An Amber severe weather warning for rain has been issued for the southeast of Northern Ireland, valid from 23:00 on Sunday through to 08:00 on Monday morning. Within the Amber warning area 50-75 mm of rain could fall over a short period of time, leading to a risk of flash flooding.

There remains some uncertainty regarding the northern extent of the heaviest rain, whilst a wider Yellow severe weather warning for rain covers the whole eastern half of Northern Ireland. This Yellow warning runs from 18:00 on Sunday through to 18:00 on Monday evening.

Chief Meteorologist, Andy Page, said: “A band of very heavy rain will pivot over Northern Ireland during Sunday night, bringing totals of possibly 50-75 mm in just a short period of time. This high intensity rainfall can lead to flooding, with impacts on properties, transport networks and power outages.

“The heavy rain comes at the start of a new working week so expect disruption to the Monday morning commute and check the flood risk in your area to protect your property.”

Staying safe in heavy rain

There are several things you can do to keep yourself and your property safe during heavy rain. These include checking your properties flood risk, preparing essentials like charging your mobile phone, moving your car outside of flood risk areas and storing your valuables high up.

It is safer not to drive in these conditions but if you must drive you can do this more safely by slowing down, using main roads, using dipped headlights and giving yourself more time to react on slippery surfaces.

Later this week

After the band of rain moves through and clears through on Monday evening, conditions will settle down in Northern Ireland, though showers will persist through the week. There will be some sunny spells between the showers and temperatures will remain fairly consistent with highs of 20-21°C.
