Innovation in weather forecasting

Our dedicated team of meteorologists and weather presenters uses cutting-edge technology and engaging graphics to ensure forecasts are clearer and more useful for everyone in the UK, working with the powerful software tools Visual Cortex and Decider.

How does it work?

Visual Cortex is weather graphics software that turns complex weather data into clear, easy-to-understand graphics. It helps our forecasters explore and explain different weather scenarios interactively, using touchscreens to show how conditions could develop.

Our own tool known as Decider analyses multiple model simulations to give a more balanced picture of the weather ahead.

Why is it innovative?

Combined, these tools enable us to create clear and easy-to-understand weather graphics that show which weather patterns are most likely – and what else is possible – up to six weeks ahead. By doing this, we are making complex weather data more accessible, helping people understand what could be ahead and why it matters. The innovative approach makes forecasts more accurate, more relevant, and more engaging than ever before.
