The UK will see a mixed picture this weekend, with spells of heavy rain and brisk winds for some, while others enjoy warm September sunshine.
A weather front moving south across the country will be central to the forecast, separating cooler, fresher air in the north from warmer conditions in the south.
A wet and windy start to Saturday
Saturday will begin on a wet note across much of Scotland and northwest England, with rain also spreading into north Wales. Some of the rain is likely to be heavy, particularly across northwest England, north Wales and parts of southwest Scotland. Those travelling early in the day should keep up to date with the latest forecast, as difficult conditions are possible in the wettest areas.
After a wet Friday night, conditions should begin to turn drier across Northern Ireland. As the day progresses, the main area of rain will gradually move southwards, although there remains some uncertainty over how quickly it will reach the Midlands and parts of south Wales. The rain could also linger across northwest England for some time.
Behind the weather front, much of Scotland should become drier, although a few showers are likely to arrive from the west. Across central parts of England and Wales, Saturday could remain cloudy and wet for much of the day, accompanied by gusty or blustery winds.

Sunshine and warmth in the southeast
Southern England should remain largely dry during the daytime, with the far southeast holding on to the best of the sunshine. The weather front will mark a noticeable contrast in temperature, with cooler and fresher conditions to its north and warmer air remaining across the south.
Temperatures around London could reach the mid-20s Celsius, while most other areas are likely to see highs in the upper teens or low 20s. Where winds are strongest, however, it may feel cooler than the temperature suggests.
Rain will continue in places into Saturday evening before slowly spreading farther south. This means conditions could become wetter across parts of southern England during Saturday night. The precise position and movement of the front remain uncertain, so anyone with outdoor plans should check the forecast as the details become clearer.

A brighter and fresher Sunday
The weather front may still be affecting southern England on Sunday morning, with outbreaks of rain possible across the Channel Islands and perhaps the southernmost counties. However, the rain is expected to clear away, allowing a ridge of high pressure to bring an improving picture for much of the UK.
For many places, Sunday should become dry and bright, with a mixture of cloud and sunny spells. Winds will be lighter than on Saturday, although one or two light showers may develop. Overall, most areas should experience a fine day. Conditions in Newcastle are also expected to be reasonably good for the Great North Run.
Temperatures will generally reach the upper teens or low 20s Celsius. With sunshine, southern areas could reach 23 or 24°C, but the air will feel cooler, fresher and less humid than on Saturday.
The quieter conditions will not necessarily last. Further weather fronts and bands of rain are expected to approach during the early part of next week, maintaining the changeable pattern.
