Sample of monthly station data

Selection of monthly station data

This webpage provides monthly data for a selection of historic stations across the UK. The data are for general interest and are not representative of our current land-based observations network. If you require more detailed and complete data from sites around the UK, contact our Customer Centre.

While individual station data cannot give a complete picture of the UK’s climate, they may be useful for specific locations and comparison purposes.

This webpage is not operationally used by the Met Office; HadUK-Grid is the main dataset we use for UK climate monitoring.

These monthly station data comprise:

  • Mean daily maximum temperature (tmax)
  • Mean daily minimum temperature (tmin)
  • Days of air frost (af)
  • Total rainfall (rain)
  • Total sunshine duration (sun)

Monthly mean temperature

The monthly mean temperature is the mean of the daily mean temperature, which is calculated from the average of the mean daily maximum and mean daily minimum temperature i.e. (tmax+tmin)/2.

Missing data

Missing data (more than two days missing in a month) have been indicated by "---". Estimated data (where available) are point values interpolated to the station from the HadUK-Grid dataset and are indicated by "*" after the value.

Sunshine data

Sunshine data using a Kipp and Zonen sensor have been indicated by a "#" after the value. All other sunshine data have been recorded using a Campbell-Stokes recorder.

Update frequency

Station data files are updated on a rolling monthly basis. Data are indicated as provisional until the full network quality control has been carried out. After this, data are final.

For the purposes of this webpage, these data may include small changes in site location or instrumentation through time.

Open and Closed stations

This page contains a mixture of open and closed stations. The live UK land-based observations network changes over time as stations open and close.

The stations shown on this map comprise only a small fraction of the full UK climate network.
