Met Office daily weather: Widespread heat across the weekend

While many areas will enjoy settled and warm conditions, there will be some regional variations to keep an eye on, particularly along eastern coasts and later in the weekend. Here's what to expect as we head into Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday will bring widespread dry, hot, and sunny conditions across the UK, with temperatures soaring well above average for the time of year. Much of England west of the Meridian, including the West Midlands, far eastern and southeastern Wales, the M4 corridor, and the West Country, can expect peak temperatures around 34°C, with a 20% chance of reaching 35°C in some locations. Parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland may also see highs exceeding 30°C.

Eastern coastal areas may feel noticeably cooler due to the presence of low cloud and patchy sea fog, particularly during the morning and evening hours. These conditions could linger in places, keeping temperatures more subdued compared to inland regions.

Saturday night will remain dry and largely clear, especially in the west, where urban centres may experience locally high overnight temperatures. However, there is a possibility of low cloud from the North Sea spreading inland across eastern England and southeastern Scotland overnight. Confidence in the extent and timing of this development remains low.

Outlook for Sunday

Sunday will begin with areas of low cloud and fog along some eastern coasts, which may extend inland during the early morning. These are expected to burn back towards the coast shortly after daybreak, although the Northern Isles may remain grey and misty for much of the day.

Elsewhere, conditions will remain predominantly dry with sunny or clear spells. However, there is a risk of isolated heavy showers or thunderstorms developing inland during the afternoon. Later in the day, some of these showers may spread into parts of the west and southwest.

Temperatures will remain widely very warm or hot, particularly across the West Midlands, far eastern and southeastern Wales, the M4 corridor, and parts of the West Country, where highs of 30°C are expected. There is a 30% chance of reaching 31°C and a 10% chance of 32°C. Coastal areas exposed to onshore breezes will feel cooler, with temperatures closer to seasonal norms. Winds will be light to moderate for most, though fresh along some coasts.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Aidan McGivern, said: “We start the day though with some of that mist and low cloud affecting eastern coasts. Much of it will drift offshore once again, but a few patches will remain, keeping things cooler, and this onshore breeze will keep it cooler in the east and southeast compared with the last two heat waves.

“But come further west and that’s where the highest temperatures will be. We’re talking about widely up to 29°C or 30°C across Northern Ireland into Scotland. Scotland could see 31°C or even 32°C in some of the hotter spots towards the southwest and perhaps the Murray coast. But elsewhere it’s going to be even hotter.

“Western England, Southwest Midlands, East Wales, the West Country seeing 31°C, 32°C widely, a chance of 33°C or 34°C. So, the hot spot there, somewhere like Gloucestershire for example. But the east coast, like I say, feeling a little bit cooler because of the mist, the cloud, and that breeze coming from the North Sea.

“Then on Saturday night, we will see some of that mist and low cloud come back in again. Again, patchy in nature. It’ll be very tenuous and fickle. Elsewhere across the UK, clear skies and another very warm night to come. Once again, temperatures in some spots not below 20 Celsius. Into Sunday, there’ll be more cloud in the sky because of a system moving in from the west and another system moving in from the east.”
