Met Office daily weather: A changeable start to the week

The new week begins on an unsettled note, with further outbreaks of rain affecting northern and western parts of the UK.

Rain will be particularly heavy and persistent across eastern Northern Ireland and western Scotland, where localised impacts such as surface water and difficult travel conditions are possible.

Elsewhere, the picture is more mixed. Central and southern areas will see a combination of sunny spells and scattered heavy showers, some of which may turn thundery during the afternoon. However, there will also be drier interludes, particularly across parts of central and eastern England.

Temperatures will vary significantly depending on cloud cover and rainfall. Under persistent rain, parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, and possibly Wales and southwest England will remain on the cooler side. In contrast, central England could see temperatures rise to around 25°C, making it feel warm or even very warm locally.

Rain will continue across central and northern areas overnight, with the heaviest and most persistent rain focused in the northwest. Southern and eastern parts of the UK will be drier, with broken cloud and a few isolated showers. It will remain breezy in the south and west, but temperatures will be unremarkable for the time of year.

Outlook for Tuesday

Tuesday brings a gradual improvement for some, though conditions remain changeable. Early rain across northwest Scotland will ease and fragment through the day. Elsewhere, a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers is expected, with the potential for some of these to turn heavy and thundery, particularly across eastern and northeastern areas, including northeast Scotland by the afternoon.

Temperatures will be closer to average overall. It will feel cooler in the west where showers linger, but eastern England could still see highs of 23-25°C, especially in sunnier spots.

Showers will continue across the northeast into the evening, slowly decaying overnight. The far north and northwest may see occasional rain, while southern areas will experience a scattering of showers with clear spells developing elsewhere.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Tom Morgan, said: “After a showery weekend for many of us, Monday is set to be quite changeable, too. And there will be some pretty persistently heavy rain in places, particularly across Northern Ireland first thing this morning.

“So, we have a warning for rain in place for much of the day to come. Some flooding on the roads is possible here. And it won't just be Northern Ireland. Parts of western Scotland, parts of Wales and the southwest, we'll also see some rain at times through the day today. Further east, it's a different setup entirely. So, a mixture of sunny spells and scattered heavy showers for Scotland, northern England, parts of the Midlands and East Anglia in the southeast.

“In those sunny spells, we could see temperatures get into the mid-20s. But when those showers come along, you'll really know about it. So, some gusty winds, the potential for some hail, and certainly some frequent lightning and heavy rain as well. So, temperatures up to 25°C in the warmest spots, but generally a little bit fresher out towards the west with the wind coming in from the Atlantic.

“Now, by Monday evening, that rain will be starting to ease very slowly across western Scotland and Northern Ireland, but there'll still be showery outbreaks of rain through this evening and overnight for many northern and western parts of the UK. It's the east where we like to hold on to something a little bit drier and clearer by the time we get to the end of the night.

“But despite the clearer skies further east, temperatures will hold up into double figures. And actually, some western areas won't fall much below 15°C to 17°C tonight. So, another warm night to come. Now, Tuesday is not looking as unsettled as of late. The showers won't be quite as widespread or indeed as heavy as they have been, but nonetheless, there will be some showers or longer spells of rain for Scotland in particular, the west, northwestern parts of England as well.

“But many parts of England and Wales actually getting away with a fairly reasonable day with some dry periods. And if the sunshine does break through that cloud at times, well, we might see temperatures reach 24°C or 25°C. So, pleasant enough in any sunshine, but overall temperatures a little bit lower perhaps than they have been of late.”
