Met Office daily weather: Unsettled with showers and sunshine
The unsettled weather looks set to continue into the week with mix of showers and sunshine
Tuesday brings a continuation of the unsettled theme, though with signs of improvement in some areas. Rain across northwest Scotland will gradually fragment and ease through the day, while elsewhere, cloud and patchy rain or drizzle will edge eastwards. This will break up to allow for sunny spells and scattered showers to develop, particularly during the afternoon.
Eastern Scotland and eastern England may see some of the heaviest showers later in the day, with a small chance of isolated thunderstorms. Temperatures will be around average for the time of year, though it will feel warm in sunnier areas. Where cloud and rain persist, conditions will remain cooler, with highs reaching up to 24°C in parts of eastern England.
Does the week ahead promise something more settled, or will you need to keep dodging the downpours?

Into the evening and overnight, light rain or drizzle will linger across the far north and northwest. Elsewhere, heavy showers in eastern and northeastern areas will be slow to decay, with some showery rain possibly persisting into the night. Across inland areas, showers will mostly die out, allowing for clear spells to develop. Temperatures will be fairly typical for July, with no significant overnight cooling expected.
Outlook for Wednesday
Wednesday will see a more complex pattern, with cloudy conditions and showery rain affecting parts of the east and far north. This rain may be heavy at times and is expected to spread southwards into central areas and East Anglia as the day progresses.
In contrast, western areas will begin the day largely dry with some clear spells, although showers, some locally heavy, are likely to develop, particularly across parts of the southwest. Southeastern England will enjoy sunny spells through the day, though there remains a chance of showers, with the greatest risk of heavy downpours and thunderstorms.
Winds will generally be moderate, though fresh around exposed coasts. Temperatures will be near or slightly below average, feeling cool under cloud and rain, but warmer in any sunshine.
Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Alex Burkill, said: “The heavy rain across western parts of Scotland kind of fragments, breaks up a little bit on Tuesday, but it is gradually going to push a little bit further eastwards. And a similar story with the rain further south as well, we're gradually making its way eastward.

“So, although eastern parts will start the day dry, bright, sunny, we are going to see things turning cloudier with some rain arriving and that could turn quite heavy over some parts of Lincolnshire, Yorkshire for example, some heavier bursts. Otherwise, scattering of showers here and there. Yes, some could be heavy. There could be some thunder mixed in, but generally it doesn't look quite as unsettled as it was on Monday.
“That being said, a bit more cloud as we go through Tuesday afternoon. A little bit less sunshine on offer compared to today for many of us. And that will have a slight effect on our temperatures. On paper, they look relatively similar, but they are going to be a degree or so down. As we go later on in the week and we stick with the generally cyclonic pattern. So, the messy theme continues for a while, but I am expecting things to turn a little bit drier.”
