Met Office daily weather: Temperatures on the rise as we head through the week

A fine and settled day is expected across much of England and Wales, with early patchy low cloud and isolated fog in southern and western areas soon clearing to leave widespread sunshine. Temperatures will respond accordingly, with much of the region turning warm or very warm through the afternoon. Highs are likely to reach the mid-20s quite widely, with peak values of 27-28°C expected in parts of central and southern England.

Further north and west, a different picture emerges. Scotland and Northern Ireland will see more cloud, particularly across western areas, where early scattered showers will give way to increasing cloud cover. Some patchy light rain is possible, especially in western Scotland and Northern Ireland. Temperatures here will be notably cooler under the cloud, particularly in central and western parts.

Overnight, the area of cloud and patchy light rain or drizzle will continue to affect parts of Northern Ireland and western Scotland, edging slowly northwards. Elsewhere, it will be dry with largely clear skies, particularly across England and Wales. Temperatures will remain rather warm in the south, though not excessively so. Urban areas, particularly London, may retain some warmth overnight, though model guidance suggests this may be slightly overstated.

Outlook for Thursday

Thursday will begin with cloud and patchy rain across Northern Ireland and western Scotland, gradually breaking up through the day. Elsewhere, conditions will remain dry with sunny or clear spells developing widely. Winds will be light to moderate for most, though fresh along some western coasts.

Temperatures will remain on the warm side, particularly in the south. While northern areas will see near-normal or warm conditions, central and southern England will turn very warm or locally hot. The highest temperatures are expected in central England, where values could reach up to 29°C—just shy of the date record of 32.9°C for 19 June.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Alex Burkill, said: “There will be a few showers here and there, perhaps a bit of showery rain affecting parts of Scotland on Wednesday, a bit more cloud perhaps feeding into parts of Northern Ireland, maybe some drizzly outbreaks here. But otherwise, a lot of fine weather to be had. There may be some patches of mist and fog during the morning, but these will be pretty quick to clear because it is mid-June after all.

“And then with that, we are expecting a decent amount of sunshine, perhaps a bit more cloud across some eastern parts, but nonetheless, some decent warmth or even some real heat behind it. And so mid to high 20s quite likely, always fresher towards the northwest, and in fact towards the far northwest a bit more breeze still keeping things closer to average.

“Then later Wednesday and into Thursday, that high pressure more dominant across the whole country, so a very settled story, generally a fine picture as we go into Thursday. Again, not totally fine, most places will have a dry day, but actually there's a weak system pushing across initially Northern Ireland and then feeding into Scotland, so bringing a bit more cloud for a time and a little bit of drizzly rain towards the far west of Scotland.

“Most places though avoiding this, staying dry, lots of sunshine on offer again for much of England and Wales. And we're going to see, like I said at the start, that day-on-day rise in our temperatures, so 28, 29 Celsius quite likely towards the southeast. It is going to be pretty hot, and we're going to start to see our humidity rising as well."
