Met Office daily weather: Widely hot for many as humid conditions continue
A very warm and humid airmass continues to dominate southern parts of the UK as we begin the new week.
Monday will start warm and humid for many, with early low cloud clearing to leave prolonged sunshine across much of England and Wales. Temperatures will rise quickly, becoming widely hot across central, southern, and eastern England. The highest temperatures are expected in the Greater London to East Midlands corridor, where a peak of 34°C is forecast.
Further north and west, conditions will be more unsettled. Cloud will thicken across Northern Ireland during the morning, bringing spells of rain, which will extend into western Scotland by midday. This rain will be locally heavy at times and continue to move northeast through the afternoon, gradually clearing from Northern Ireland. Isolated thunderstorms may develop from the Midlands to northeast England later in the day.

Monday night will see rain, heavy at times with a risk of thunder, clearing northeastwards from Scotland. A legacy of thicker cloud and patchy drizzle may edge into parts of Wales and southwest England. Any isolated thunderstorms in eastern England will move offshore into the North Sea. Elsewhere, it will remain dry with clear spells and another warm, sultry night across the southeastern half of the UK.
Outlook for Tuesday
Tuesday brings a more mixed picture. A band of cloud and a few showers will stretch from the southwest approaches through Wales to northeast England and southeast Scotland. These will tend to fragment, but sharp, slow-moving showers may develop in convergence zones across northern England and eastern/central Scotland. Southeast of this boundary, it will remain very warm to hot and humid, with a small chance of an isolated afternoon thunderstorm. Winds will be light to moderate.
Tuesday night will be mostly dry with variable cloud. Central and southeastern England will start clear but may cloud over from the northeast later. Another warm night is expected in the southeast.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Greg Dewhurst, said: “Temperatures climbing quickly through the day today but it's not dry everywhere. We do have low pressure across the northwest of the UK introducing some cloud and some heavy rain across Northern Ireland and Scotland as we move through the day. But it is a hot picture across England and Wales, particularly towards the southeast where temperatures could be around 34°C, maybe even 35°C.
“So, looking at the details, some low cloud initially this morning, but for much of England and Wales this largely moves back towards coastal stretches. Across Northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland a cloudier day to come with some outbreaks of rain moving across Northern Ireland, western Scotland. Some of this rain could be heavy at times, could lead to some localized flooding as we move through the afternoon into the evening time. But brighter skies across eastern Scotland, some sunnier spells here. And if we look at the temperatures under the cloud and rain, generally reaching the low 20s, perhaps in the sunshine eastern Scotland towards the mid 20s.
“But across England and Wales, higher than the weekend, largely the mid to high 20s for many of us and then the low 30s across central and eastern parts of England, 34°C towards the London area. The heat of the day could spark one or two heavy showers across eastern England as we move through the afternoon into the evening time. But it will be a hot start to Wimbledon and also for those leaving across Glastonbury, temperatures around 29, 30°C. You may need some extra water for your journeys back.

“Through the evening time, heavy rain across Northern Ireland pushing eastwards into the rest of Scotland, perhaps Northern England too. One or two heavy showers still possible across eastern parts, but this weather front slowly pushes southeastwards overnight to the far southeast of England. It's another warm, humid night to come tonight, temperatures not falling much below 20°C. But notice the fresher air starting to move in Northern Ireland and Scotland here, minimum temperatures back down to 11 or 12°C.
“It's a sunny start here on Tuesday morning, dry for many, just one or two showers across the far northwest. This weather front though lingers across southwest England into Wales, the Midlands, Northern England, southern Scotland, thick enough to give some outbreaks of rain at times through the day. But sunshine to the southeast of this and again some strong UV developing around 7 or 8 on the index. And those temperatures rising as well, 34, 35°C.
“So another hot day to come at Wimbledon. Under the cloud and rain, temperatures around the low 20s. And in the sunny spells across Scotland and Northern Ireland again, high teens to low 20s here. But some fresher feeling air into the evening time on Tuesday."
