Met Office Daily Weather: Wet and windy for some
Strong wind and heavy rain is the theme of Tuesday’s weather forecast, with further scattered showers likely at times.
Low pressure is exerting its influence over the UK’s weather on Tuesday, bringing a band of more persistent rain which starts Tuesday morning over northern England, Wales and parts of southwest England before moving gradually south and east through the day.
Accompanying the rain is windy conditions, especially for those in the northern half of the UK. Gusts in excess of 50mph are possible on exposed coasts in what will feel unseasonably windy for some.
Met Office Meteorologist Honor Criswick said: “Many of us on Tuesday morning are going to be waking up to some quite blustery outbreaks of rain. As this system slowly sinks its way southeast, that’s going to bring further outbreaks of rain.
“It’ll be a little brighter behind this front but still with plenty of showers, particularly across the northwest, where some could be heavy with even the odd rumble of thunder and a risk of coastal gales.”
Temperatures on Tuesday will return to around average for the time of year, likely peaking around 20C in the southeast, and into the mid-teens further north.
On Wednesday, it’s likely to be a bit drier for most areas, with a mixture of sunny spells and showers. The heavier and more frequent showers are more likely in western areas, while areas further east are likely to stay mainly dry.
While Wednesday will start windy again in Scotland, this will slowly ease through the day.
Honor explained: “It’ll be drier for parts of England and Wales through the first part of the morning on Wednesday, but still plenty of those blustery showers moving eastwards, especially across Scotland and Northern Ireland.
“By the afternoon, we’ll see a few more showers creeping in from the west to those further south, with some of these likely to be heavy.”
Further changeable weather is likely later in the week, with low pressure to the north continuing to invite some periods of showers, as well as some more persistent rain at times. Central and southern parts of the UK are likely to see a more unsettled day on Thursday, with more frequent showers and some blustery winds.
