Met Office weekend weather forecast: Wet weather for some
Further wet and windy weather is in the forecast this weekend, with some thundery downpours possible at times.
Friday will see an initial band of rain move gradually east over much of England and Wales through the morning and will be followed by a mixture of showers, cloud and some sunny spells at times.
However, by late on Friday evening the next band of rain is arriving from the west, which will be responsible for a fairly wet day for many on Saturday, with windy conditions likely for those further south and west.
Speaking in the Met Office’s Weekend Weather forecast, Presenter and Meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: “An area of low pressure is being deepened by the jet stream and that will bring some windy conditions, especially in the south and southwest on Saturday.
“The southwest will start Saturday with the heaviest showers, with some longer spells of rain first thing also moving through south Wales, southern England and into the Midlands.”
Thunder and lightning is an additional hazard as these showers, some of which will be quite heavy in nature, track across the UK.
While exact positions of showers are hard to pinpoint, much of the UK will see at least some rain on Saturday, with around 30mm of rain possible for some, possibly around 50mm for some by the end of the day.
That area of low pressure gradually moves to the east on Sunday, reducing the frequency and intensity of any showers as it does so, though it won’t be completely dry.
Aidan explained: “We start Sunday with cloud, showers and wind across the east coast but then the focus turns more towards the northwest as the afternoon approaches, with the heaviest and more frequent showers pushing into Northern Ireland and western Scotland. Some scattered showers elsewhere, but certainly fewer than on Saturday.”
Away from those showers, there’s likely to be at least some sunny spells, with the best of any sunshine likely to be in the Midlands or the southeast.
Changeable conditions are likely to continue at the start of next week, with the possibility still around of some thundery showers at times, accompanied by some warmer air in the south.
