Met Office daily weather: Sunshine, showers, and feeling cooler

This Bank Holiday weekend brings with it some varied weather across the UK, with a blend of sunshine, showers, and cooler temperatures.

Saturday starts off with a contrast between north and south. Southern and central parts of England can expect a largely dry day with sunny spells, particularly in the southeast, where temperatures may still climb into the low 20s, possibly reaching 22°C in some spots. However, a risk of showery rain lingers over the far south, especially near the English Channel, which could see brief, heavy bursts. Thunder is unlikely but not entirely ruled out.

Further north, conditions turn cooler and breezier. A band of cloud and patchy rain will move southward across Northern Ireland and northern England, followed by brighter skies and scattered showers, especially in northeast Scotland. The north will feel noticeably chillier, with brisk winds and highs struggling to reach the mid-teens.

Saturday night will be mostly dry, with broken cloud and a few lingering showers in the north and northeast. Clear skies elsewhere will allow temperatures to dip, bringing a risk of grass frost and even localized air frost in rural areas.

Outlook for Sunday

Sunday looks more settled overall. Most areas will remain dry with a mix of cloud and sunny intervals. A few light showers may develop in northern and eastern regions, but these will be isolated. Temperatures will be near average in the south and west, while the north and east remain on the cool side, especially along the east coast where brisk winds will add a chill to the air.

Honor Criswick, Met Office presenter and meteorologist said: “Let’s start with Saturday’s weather. There’s a chance of mist and fog, especially across East Anglia, and more cloud over Scotland with some showers in the far north. In the southwest, showers will push in from the south and could become heavy or even thundery, though they may stay offshore near the English Channel.

“Elsewhere, many areas will enjoy a dry start to the weekend with plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures—highs reaching 20 to 21°C in the south. However, it will feel cooler across northeast Scotland and North Sea coasts, with temperatures in the low to mid-teens.

"On Sunday, a weakening front in the south will drift away, and high pressure remains dominant to the northwest. Most places will stay dry, though eastern areas—particularly East Anglia and North Sea coasts—may see more cloud and a few showers. The west will hold onto the sunshine.

“Temperatures will be cooler than earlier in the week, with highs of 15 to 16°C in the southwest and low double digits elsewhere, especially in breezy, exposed spots.”
