Met Office daily weather: Temperatures to peak into the mid 30s

Tuesday begins with areas of cloud and showery rain, some locally thundery, affecting central and southern regions.

These outbreaks will gradually move north-eastwards, allowing increasing amounts of hot sunshine to develop across much of England and Wales by the afternoon. Scotland and Northern Ireland will remain generally cloudier, though early rain will clear the Northern Isles, leaving behind a scattering of showers.

Temperatures will be warm in the northwest, but elsewhere it will be very warm or hot, with central and western England into Wales likely to see locally very hot conditions. Sea breezes will keep coastal areas cooler.

During the evening and overnight, there is a very small chance of an isolated thunderstorm over central England and Wales. Otherwise, showers further north will fade, leaving clear periods. Low cloud may persist in the far north, and there is a risk of low cloud, mist or fog forming across southern England.

There remains some uncertainty regarding the timing of cloud clearance from central and northern parts of England and Wales. maximum temperatures of 31–33 °C, with a localised 34 °C possible in the West Midlands and a low probability of reaching 35 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday

Wednesday will start very warm and, in southern areas, very humid. There is a low risk of isolated showers or thunderstorms across northern areas, mainly Scotland, during the morning.

For most, it will be a fine, hot and sunny day with light winds. Cloud will build in the southeast later, bringing an increasing risk of showers and elevated thunderstorms, particularly overnight. Northern England and Scotland will also see a rising chance of showers from mid-afternoon, extending to Northern Ireland later. There is a small chance of torrential downpours with hail, lightning and localised gusty winds in Scotland and northern England.

Temperatures will be widely very warm to hot, with locally very hot conditions expected in central, eastern and northeastern England.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Honor Criswick, said: “A warm and possibly quite muggy start. Still some outbreaks of rain clearing the northern ales, eventually sweeping their way north-eastwards through the course of the morning, but into tomorrow, it's likely we'll see less cloud around. Still a chance of some showers as that band moves its way north-eastwards. These being quite sporadic in nature. And overall, many of us are going to see much more of those blue skies and hot sunshine.

“But this time, a little bit of a change as to where we see the highest temperatures. Central areas of England, parts of Wales are widely going to be pushing into the low to mid30s. Even northern parts of England, mid to high 20s and parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, too. So, Tuesday, there is going to be more sunshine around and temperatures up by a degree or two. So, it is going to feel uh particularly hot where we do see those sunny spells.

“And then into the evening, we do have a band of cloud just starting to clip in to the far northwest of Scotland. But otherwise, many areas are going to see quite a pleasant evening, largely dry, plenty of clear skies, and a continuation of those warm and muggy nights. Then for the rest of the week, we still find ourselves with low pressure to the west, high pressure across mainland Europe.

“So, we'll continue to see that southerly flow at times. High pressure largely dominating. So, mostly dry, settled. There's still going to be lots of sunshine for the rest of the week. the peak of the temperatures likely on Tuesday, but even for the rest of the week, it is still going to be above average. So, feeling warm.”
