Met Office daily weather: Sunshine and warm temperature for many

Saturday will begin with low cloud lingering across central and eastern areas, but this will lift and break through the morning, giving way to increasing amounts of sunshine by the afternoon. Elsewhere, conditions will be mainly sunny throughout the day.

Temperatures will be very warm in the west, with highs reaching 28–29°C across parts of south and west Wales and southwest England. There is a low probability of isolated locations touching 30°C. Central and western England and eastern Wales will also see widely above-average temperatures, peaking between 23–25°C. Northern and eastern regions will experience near-normal conditions.

Winds will strengthen across the far southwest, with strong and gusty easterly winds developing later in the day.

The evening and overnight period will remain dry across most of the UK. However, light rain or drizzle is possible across the Shetland Islands, and there is a low risk of showers developing across western Northern Ireland later in the night.

Cloud will tend to increase again across central and eastern areas, though it is expected to be less extensive than the previous night. Strong southeasterly winds will persist in the west.

Outlook for Sunday

Sunday will see areas of low cloud across some central and eastern regions during the morning, but this will gradually clear to leave plenty of sunshine for most. The Northern Isles may remain rather grey throughout the day.

Temperatures will again be very warm, locally hot in central and western areas. Eastern coastal regions and the Northern Isles will experience more moderate conditions, closer to seasonal norms.

Winds will be light to moderate for many, though strong and gusty conditions will continue in parts of the southwest.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Greg Dewhurst, said: “A great start to Saturday across central and eastern parts for the weekend to begin with. Some rain and drizzle in places, but slowly through the day the clouds should lift and break and it should allow some bright spells. Best of the sunshine will be in parts of Wales, the west country extending into Northern Ireland, with central northern parts of Scotland generally seeing plenty of sunshine too.

“The sunshine perhaps turning hazy at times across the southwest. Another thing to notice across the southwest is the wind will pick up here as well. We could see gusts around 30 to 40 mph or so. This could lead to some local disruption through the day on Saturday. It may just take the edge off the temperatures a little too. But in the sunshine temperatures reaching 27°C, 28°C, possibly 29°C. So not quite as high compared to Friday.

“Mid-20s generally across central and eastern areas where the sun comes out. If it stays cloudy, more like the low 20s. So, a little bit cooler overall on Saturday for many of us but perhaps feeling a little warmer for parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland where there will be a bit more sunshine.

“And that sunshine will continue into Sunday for many as well. Again, a grey start perhaps down some eastern coast, but the low cloud should burn back to coastal stretches. And even here, we'll see some bright or sunny spells developing at times. Sunshine turning hazy at times as weather fronts try to edge in a little closer. Maybe the risk of one or two showers in the far west later. The winds should fall a little lighter across southwest England as well. And temperatures still widely the mid-20s, locally 27°C, 28°C across central southern parts once more.”
