Met Office daily weather: Dry with sunny spells albeit slightly cooler

Tuesday will begin with low cloud across many areas, particularly in the east. While this cloud will gradually break up inland through the day, some eastern coastal regions may remain rather cloudy. A band of thicker cloud accompanied by light rain or drizzle will move south-southwest across northern and eastern Scotland, later reaching north-east England.

Inland and western areas will enjoy sunny spells, with the best of the brightness expected in central-southern and south-eastern England, as well as western parts of the UK. However, south-west England will continue to see an ongoing chance of showers, some of which may be thundery. Breezy conditions are expected, especially along eastern and southern coastal areas.

Temperatures will vary, with lower maxima across the south-west due to cloud and showers. Sunnier areas of central-southern and south-eastern England and western UK may reach 23–25°C. Overnight, temperatures will hold in the low to mid double figures in the south, but it will be much cooler further north, with a localised grass frost possible in sheltered glens of Scotland.

Outlook for Wednesday

Wednesday will bring plenty of dry weather across the UK. Cloud that moved in from the east overnight will break up quickly inland, allowing sunny spells to develop widely. There is a very low risk of heavy, possibly thundery showers in the far south and south-west early in the day, and perhaps the odd light shower in the Northern Isles.

Winds will be breezy in the east but light to moderate elsewhere. Daytime temperatures will be near normal for most areas, although it will feel rather cool near some North Sea coasts.

Overall, the midweek period offers a mix of conditions, with eastern areas starting cloudier and cooler, while western and southern regions enjoy brighter and warmer spells. The risk of showers remains confined to the south-west, with most places seeing a fine and settled day on Wednesday.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Alex Deakin, said: “We are seeing a bit of a northerly breeze which will turn things cooler across the northern isles in particular, bringing in more cloud which may again be fairly stubborn across the central and eastern parts of Scotland and northern and eastern parts of England during Tuesday.

“These might produce the odd little bit of drizzle, but generally staying dry. More likely to see some wet weather in the southwest. A scattering of showers. Again, the odd heavy one is possible, but they will be well scattered across Devon, Cornwall, maybe Pembrokeshire catching one too. Perhaps even as far east as Dorset and Somerset, but the vast majority, I think, again, will stay dry and we'll have some good spells of sunshine, particularly west coast of Wales and the south coast of England, where temperatures likely to get up to 24 25° again.

“Again, quite a contrast where we keep that cloud and with a a bit of a breeze coming in from the North Sea, it's going to feel fairly fresh. And when we compare the temperatures to the average for the time of year, you can see cooler than average where we keep that cloud and the breeze from the North Sea, but warmer further west where we see some sunny spells.

“Still the potential for one or two heavy showers, maybe even the odd rumble of thunder in the far southwest of England during Tuesday evening. And that cloud starting to come back in land. That will be a feature of the weather for the next couple of days. The high pressure remains in control, but remains sitting to the north, at least for the time being.”
