Met Office daily weather: Sunshine and showers with temperatures feeling mild

A band of cloud and rain will move southeastwards across the UK during the day, with some locally heavy downpours expected, particularly across parts of Wales, western, and southwestern England. As the system progresses, it will tend to fragment into showers through the afternoon. In contrast, much of central, northern, and eastern Scotland will remain dry, enjoying the best of the sunshine.

Temperatures will vary depending on cloud cover. Areas where cloud persists, most likely in a corridor from the Peak District to central southern England, will see subdued temperatures. Elsewhere, conditions will be closer to average for the time of year, with locally warm temperatures possible in the southwest and perhaps the far southeast. Where skies brighten on either side of the cloudier corridor, highs of 24-25°C may be reached, though most areas will see temperatures in the high teens to low twenties.

Overnight, conditions will remain rather cloudy for many, with some patchy rain or residual showers lingering in places. However, most areas will stay dry. A few clear spells are expected, and some low cloud or isolated fog patches may develop, particularly in more sheltered locations.

Outlook for Wednesday

Wednesday will be a largely dry day for much of the UK, with sunny spells developing widely. There is a small chance of a few light afternoon showers, mainly affecting eastern parts of Scotland and England. Later in the day, cloud will begin to thicken from the northwest, bringing the likelihood of mainly light rain by the evening.

Winds will remain light throughout the day, and temperatures will be around average for the time of year. In sunnier parts of the south, it may feel locally warm.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Alex Burkill, said: “As we go through Tuesday, it’ll be drier and brighter towards the east, wetter in the west. But that whole frontal system is making its way south-eastward. So even east and southeastern parts will quite quickly turn cloudy and some outbreaks of rain arriving here. The the band of rain due to the front is actually going to break up as we go through the day and turn more showery in nature as it pushes across central southern parts of England.

“And as it does so, we could see some more intense bursts developing. So, some heavier showers look quite likely across central southern parts in particular, maybe into the Midlands as well. And the odd rumble of thunder can't be ruled out. The greatest chance of staying dry tomorrow will be across northeastern parts, eastern and northeastern Scotland.

“Elsewhere, quite cloudy for many of us and most of us will see a bit of rain at times. Albeit towards the southwest turning dry as we go into the afternoon and some brighter breaks quite likely here. Where you do get the sunshine, unsurprisingly, it's going to feel relatively warm. Temperatures again in the low 20s, even low 20s again across parts of Scotland. But if you're stuck under the cloud because of that front, temperatures will be pegged back just a few degrees.

“So, feeling a little bit fresher perhaps than some recent days. Then as we go later on into Tuesday, we are going to see some more showery rain. And that kind of takes us through the end of the week. Really a changeable theme. There will be some drier periods, but also some slightly wetter ones."
