Met Office daily weather: Rain, showers, and fluctuating temperatures

As we move into the second week of November, the UK is set for a spell of unsettled weather, with rain, showers, and fluctuating temperatures affecting much of the country. Here’s what to expect for the start of the week.

Monday will be a predominantly cloudy day across the UK, with bands of rain and showers moving north and east through the day. Some of these showers will be heavy at times, particularly in southern and eastern areas. However, there will also be drier and brighter intervals, offering some respite from the wet weather.

Winds will be light to moderate for most but could become fresh or strong along southern and eastern coasts. Temperatures are expected to be near or slightly above average for the time of year, with highs of 11–14°C likely in the east and a local maximum of 15°C possible in the southeast.

During Monday night, a band of rain will continue to move northeast across some eastern areas, followed by clearer spells and a risk of fog developing across northern regions later. Showers elsewhere will gradually die out through the evening. Further rain and strong winds are expected to arrive across southwest and central areas, as well as Northern Ireland, later in the night. It will be a rather mild night overall, though a patchy frost is possible between weather systems in northern and northwestern areas, and temperatures will be several degrees colder than the previous night elsewhere.

Outlook for Tuesday

Tuesday will start drier and brighter in northern Scotland, but for many, it will be a cloudy day with rain developing more widely in the north and west. Some of this rain will be heavy at times and accompanied by strengthening winds, with coastal gales possible later. Much of the east and southeast will probably remain dry for most of the day, though a few spots of rain are possible. Temperatures will turn mild for most, with highs widely reaching 12–14°C and locally 15–16°C in sheltered areas. Several yellow weather warnings are in place for Southwest England between 12pm and 11:59pm, south Wales for between 7am and 11:59pm, and southern Scotland between 10am and 11:59pm.

Further rain is expected on Tuesday night, heavy at times, but becoming drier with clear spells across a central swathe of the UK later. It will remain windy, with coastal gales in places.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Liam Eslick, said: “A bright start to Monday for Wales and much of England, but there will be some persistent rain across northern Scotland, which could be heavy at times. However, towards the south, we do have this band of organised heavy showers which is moving its way north and eastwards through the afternoon. So, we could potentially see some disruption in a few places, some surface water flooding, so do take care if you are travelling around on Monday.

“But behind those showers towards the south and southwest, we will start to see some brighter skies as well. Maybe just some isolated showers here and there. But with that southerly wind, it will feel rather mild once again. 13°C or 14°C across the south, tens and elevens across Scotland.

“Now through the latter part of the afternoon and in the evening, those heavier showers will push off towards the North Sea, leaving some clearer skies behind. But we will have some blustery showers again across Wales and through the English Channel ahead of this second band of rain that is moving in towards the south and west by Tuesday morning.”
