Met Office daily weather: Heavy rain and blustery winds

Wednesday will see bands of rain and showers sweeping northeast across most regions, becoming increasingly heavy and locally thundery as the day progresses. While there will be some limited sunny spells between the showers, more marked clearances are expected later in the day across western and southwestern areas. These regions will also experience stron g winds, with a risk of coastal gales.

Temperatures will vary significantly across the country. Eastern and northeastern areas will feel rather warm, with highs reaching the low 20s Celsius in eastern England and locally around 20°C in parts of Scotland. In contrast, western and southwestern regions will be several degrees cooler, with temperatures in the mid to high teens.

A band of heavy rain will clear northeastwards during the evening and overnight, leaving behind clear spells and blustery showers. These showers will be most frequent near western and southwestern coasts. Western Scotland could see some more persistent rain. Winds will remain strong, with a continued risk of coastal gales, particularly in western and northwestern areas.

Cooler air will begin to feed in behind the front overnight. Although it will remain too breezy for frost, temperatures could drop to mid-single figures Celsius in sheltered rural spots.

Outlook for Thursday

Thursday will begin with overnight rain clearing east and northeast, followed by a mix of sunny spells and blustery showers. These showers will be most frequent in western areas, especially northwest Scotland, where they may merge into longer spells of rain. There is a risk of hail and thunderstorms in these regions.

Showers will gradually ease during the evening, becoming confined to western coastal areas. It will remain windy throughout the day, particularly near showers, with gales likely across northwest Scotland. Temperatures will be rather cool in the west, while eastern areas will see near-average conditions.

Met Office presenter and meteorologist, Honor Criswick said, "It's not going to be feeling quite as cool and fresh as we head towards Wednesday morning. A slightly milder night. Lows reaching around 12 to 13°C across many towns and cities. And Wednesday itself is set to be a bit more of a cloudier day.

“Still a risk of showers even across eastern areas where we've seen more sunshine over the last couple of days. And then once again, more areas of persistent rain pushing in from the west. This turning heavy once again, possibly thundery. And it is going to be quite a breezy day for all, particularly around exposed coastal areas. Some moderate to fresh winds here as well as some heavy outbreaks of rain towards the west. So, it's not going to be the most pleasant of days.

“We're going to see fairly similar temperatures, highs reaching around 20°C, but that being offset by the cloud and outbreaks of rain into the evening."
